Danny and I looked down at my phone, milliseconds after it had pinged, the paranoid nature of our conversation still lingering although we fell silent.
My mind traversed each letter, reading it for millions of times before my phone screen went off, we had been staring at the preview long enough for my phone to go off. "June. It's June." I laughed, brushing off the situation in a kind of delusion. "She definitely knows where you live, Y/n. We need to get out of here." Danny started packing regardless of what I was going to say. I just huffed. "She could be watching us! She'd just follow us. And where the hell can we even go?" I leant on my kitchen counter, the cold marble on my elbows feeling strange. "My apartment. June wouldn't dare go near that building. The men there are... dangerous and a small blonde barbie like her alone is easy bait. I feel disgusting saying that but it's common sense and she wouldn't even know what room." He shrugged, nonchalantly. "She threatens you, she threatens her health." He smiled.
Danny and I locked my car up in the garage, which I hadn't actually used in probably years, and we locked the house up too. We started our trek to his building, him armed with a mini pocket knife tucked into his waistband, while I carried our bag. Warily, we made our way out into the street, passing past cars. We probably looked strange, but people probably passed it off as us rushing somewhere, it was 4pm.
Looking up to the tall brick building gave me memories from a few weeks ago where I had come to help collect Danny's things for him. Back here... somewhere I never planned on returning to. I still remember the way my stomach churned as I looked down to the gory photos of Danny's beloved work.
"In we go." He breathed in through shut teeth, the feeling of unpleasant familiarity washing over him too.
We walked through the lobby, the obnoxious jade green damask wallpaper already hurting my eyes. The fluorescent lights buzzing was enough to drive anyone insane within literal seconds, I knew from experience.
We stepped onto the creaky staircase, not daring to take the elevator as I could already tell from the way he looked at it that he didn't trust it. We ascended to the second floor, avoiding the badly painted mahogany railing. The second floor was filled with drunken men, who reeked of cat piss or... probably not cat piss. I clung to Danny's side as we reached the third floor. His room was located up here, I remembered. We glanced around us, this floor was more vacant than the prior, but still had its fair share of creeps on it.
Slipping into the miserable little apartment, we closed and locked the door. I set all of our things down onto his kitchen countertop by a desolate wine bottle. Now wasn't the time for that though. He struck a match and lit a candle, placing it by our things so we could see. I gave him a questioning look, not catching onto the fact that he had no electricity. I mean, he had been living with me for the past month. He opened his mouth to explain, but I hushed him. "I understand." My voice was soft, and as we locked eyes, the fear and paranoia of the reality around us seemed to fall away. "Well, are you hungry?" I smiled, looking to his cupboards. There has to be something in there... soup or just anything. "There's instant noodles in there, here." He handed me the match box he had previously set down on the counter. "Thank you, I'll make some." I nodded and looked through his pots and pans, not much. I decided to use a small saucepan, I could break the noodles up a little to fit them in. "You have water, don't you?" I smirked, teasingly. "Yeah. Of course I do." Danny sat himself on the lonely maroon armchair that he had been eyeing endlessly for the past minute. I watched as he sat down, he seemed relieved, like he felt at home. It's easy to get stuck up in tiny things when it's all you have, well, had.
I filled up the pan with water and put it on the stove, after lighting it. I let it come to a boil and then I placed broken up pieces of noodles into it, enough for two, saving the flavour packets for the end.
Time skip
We laid on the couch, after our food, entwined in each other's arms as we watched some horrible show on his cheap TV. It was a downgrade from my large house but it was with him, so I had few complaints.
I was about to drift off when I was disturbed. A knock. Danny and I shot each other fearful looks as he cautiously got up and looked through the peephole. He seemed to let go, moving his hand down to the handle and opening the door. "Hey, Daniel, I noticed you're back, how delightful. I hope you enjoy it back here, and you can always come down if you'd wish... oh- who's that?" A woman, around 47 with golden hair and icy eyes, a round face and a slim frame gestures to me with a half-smile. "This... is my girlfriend Y/n." He's hesitant, but informs her anyway. She seemed pleased at this, bidding her goodbye, not after muttering a quick 'hi' to me (to which I responded with a simple wave and a smile) and walking back to her apartment.
He shuts and locks the door again. "I'm
gonna take a shower, darling. Rest, I'll be back in a moment." He leans over the sofa and places a gentle kiss on my forehead, his hand that he wasn't using to lean on the couch, meeting and gracing the skin on my cheek. I looked to him and pecked him on the lips before he went to go and shower. And that's when my mind started to wander... back to June.
