Chapter 9

The next few days was spent with Brooks and unwrapping all the wedding gifts. It was mostly money and stuff. I was so excited for our honey moon, but that would have to wait till Brooks got back from doing his rodeo thing.

He came from around behind me while I was attempting to cook rice pudding, and hugged me, "How does it feel to be Mrs Brooks West?"

"Hmm... let me think," I said spinning around in his arms and planting a kiss on his lips, "Amazing," I said in a low voice with a sly smile. He asked me this every day since the wedding. I looked up into his eyes, "Do you really have to leave tomorrow?" I asked.

His face went sad and he stroked a piece of stray hair away from my face, "Yeah, darl sorry, but I'm really close," he said.

I struggled out of his arms and took a step back, crossing my arms in frustration, "What are you so close to? What's so important that you marry me then leave?" I steamed.

He turned on one foot and ran his hands through his hair, "It's hard to explain."

I stamped my foot and stormed over to him, "What is so hard to explain!"

"Babe come on," he said pleading.

"Don't you babe me! But if this is how your gunna be, you can sleep on the lounge tonight," I said with venom lacing my every word. He just walked out of the kitchen leaving me standing there.

I woke up the next morning and he was gone.

I rolled out of bed after the shitiest night sleep. I looked at the clock, 4:00.
"Great," I murmured, just enough time to go around and check all the wind mills before work.

I ran into work 10 minuets late in a fluster.
"You've got a busy day today, Mrs West," giggled Gabi, the young receptionist, "Two house calls today, and you have that new work experience kid with you for the week."

"Oh joy," I said with a role of my eye and a smile.

I started to finalize some paperwork before I had to go out for some house calls. Around 9 the front door bell rang, signaling someone had come in the door. I poked my head out of my small office and see a young boy around 16, in jeans, collared T-shirt and a pecked cap. His brown eyes shone in excitement of the up and coming days and his light brown hair was neatly cropped.
"Hey, I'm Mitch," he said with a big smile and looked genuinely excited to be here.
I get up from my seat and walk around to shake his hand, he was close to 6 ft in height towering over my small frame, "Hi Im Audrey Is- West, the Vet Doctor, you must be here for work experience?" I asked and he nodded, "Well to start off the week we have two house calls," his smile and enthusiasm reminded me of a younger me.

The days flew by, Mitch was a good kid, he showed genuine enthusiasm and love in what he had been doing, he was definitely going places.
"So tell me Mitch what do you want to do when you leave?" I asked as we drive back into town for some lunch, because I forgot mine in the rush this morning.

"Well Im not sure yet," he said with a smile.

"Sounds good to me,"I said with a light laugh and a smile, "What do you want for lunch?"
He pulled something out of his esky, "All sorted."
"Nah I insist, my shout," I said was well pulled up to one of the towns small take away. I jumped out of my Hilux and walked in with Mitch close on my heals "What would you like?" I asked.
"Um... I'll have what ever your having." He said.
"How bout some scollops covered in chicken salt and a leg horn burger?" I said. He nodded.
We ordered and stood to the side whilst others ordered.
We stood there and some pop crap came on so I tuned it out. I felt so bad about the fight Brooks and I had, I mean we are married for goodness sake, this shouldn't happen anymore. I hope he was being safe, I always found it hard watching him ride, but I use to enjoy going to the local rodeos between study to watch him. I looked down at the ground, sometimes I let my stubbornness get in the way.
Then I remembered, I had a truck coming this Saturday to pick up the weiners for the feedlot. Damn. Its going to be a hard job, I did plan on having Brooks to help me.
My thoughts were pulled from my focus by Mitch pulling me out the door with the food.
"What were you so concentrated on in there?" he asked, "They were calling your name for a good 5 minutes," he said as he shut his door.

"Ah just about a big job I have to do this weekend," I said turning on the ute, "Trucks coming to pick up some weiners from my place, and my husband is away."

His eyes lit up, "I could help, I mean I have nothing on this weekend."

"Hmm I don't know you will have to talk to your parents and get back to me," I said looking straight a head.

It took us half an hour to get to the next house call we were just preg testing a mare. We got there and was directed by a women over to the yard. We got to the yards and Mitch just stopped and stared. The owners daughter Ellen was in the yards working with the mare trying to get her in. I had met this girl a few times and she was pretty smart girl, but tough. She had longish light blond hair, blue eyes and glasses. She was the kind of girl that I envied back in school. Just beautiful. I nudge Mitch to get his attention and he unfocused and blushed a deep scarlet.
"Lets get to work shall we?" I said giving him a wink, which caused him to blush even more. I just laughed.
"Hey Ellen," I said waving. She stopped what she was doing and came over.
"Hey Mrs West," she said with a sly grin.
I just laughed at her, "This here is Mitch, he is working with me for the week for work experience," I said with a nod and pointed to Mitch, who in the mean time has fixed himself up.
With a charming smile he held out his hand to shake and said, "G'day."
This was just to cute, she took his hand and shook it and maybe held onto it a little to long, I watched her eyes close a little in anticipation as she squeezed her hand and Mitch flinched silently.
I clapped my hands nice and loudly, breaking the grip on each other "Ok kids, lets get to work."
Ellen's face lit up, "Lets go!" she said snapping out of what ever faze she was in and ran towards the yard, "Good luck with that one cowboy," I murmured under my breath with a light chuckle.

We worked and Mitch just couldn't take his eyes of Ellen, it reminded me of the way that Brooks looks when I catch his staring at me. Its that look of pride and passion and just bewilderment. The mare tested positive to being pregnant and we were ready to pack up, well I was packing up and Mitch was to busy flirting with Ellen, she on the other hand was oblivious to this either that or she ignored him. I took Mitch as a guy who was humble enough but still would stick to something he wanted until the end.
I could faintly hear there conversation, "So you will come and watch me ride next weekend?" he asked her and she nodded slightly replying with the fact she would already be there.

I put the last thing back in the ute before honking the horn to get Mitch's attention, "Come on cowboy, time to go!" I yelled as he jumped in fright. The two quickly exchanged numbers before he jumped in the car.

"Audrey, I think I'm in love," he said as we pulled out the drive.
I just laughed lightly, he didn't know that half of it.
