Nathan's Funeral was last Monday. Brooks really took it bad, he had fallen back into his old ways and it was heart breaking to watch. I had started to lock away the liquor, and he use to beg me for it, beg me for it just so he could drink away that memory of Nathan. I broke my heart. The Doctor said it was a stroke that was a contributing factor as to why he fell out of the bloody tractor. He said "Up to 25 percent of stroke under age 45 is caused by a dissecting blood vessel in the neck. This is a small tear in a big blood vessel that causes a clot to form and travel to the brain," and he believed that this is what happened to him, but it was the back wheel of the tractor that had killed him.
Hayley didn't even get to tell Nathan he was the father.
"Hey babe, how you feelin'?" I asked rubbing his back. He just groaned and rolled over to face me and I placed a quick peck on his lips, "do you remember the first time I met Nathan?" He annoyed me so much I knocked him for 6 and threatened to cut his nuts out," that earned a little laugh. It warmed my heart to see him laugh, "What you wanna do today? I've taken the day off work so we can hang out."
"Babe that's real nice but I've got so much work to do that its not funny. I've been off for how long and I-"
I cut him off, I felt like a teenager again, "so then whats another day?" I said flipping him on his back and I straddled him. I could see it in his eyes, he was trying to fight it, he didn't think it was right for him to be happy when his best friend and cousin was dead, "come on, get up, get dressed, lets go for a ride."
Not even half an hour later we were saddled, I was on the blue roan mare and Brooks was on Denny. We rode for a good 3 hours, just at a walking pace, until we came to a curtain place. I could still see that Brooks was upset. I dismounted, "remember this place?" I asked as I looked out over the salt bush.
Brooks still on his horse, "yeah it's the place I first proposed to you," he said glumly.
"And the second time and I said yes didn't I, silly. Cheer up!" I said as I walked over to Denny. I rested my arm on his leg, "hop down the damn is just over there lets go for a swim."
Brooks just nodded and slid out of the saddle. We walked hand in hand like teenagers towards the dam.
Brooks striped down to just his boxers and I to my bar and underwear. "I Love you," I said turning to him as we neared the side of the damn. He just smiled then I pushed him in.
The water splashed around him.
"Hey!" he yelled as he resurfaced and I just laughed. He swam over to me. Now the dams were dug out so they have a slope down for a few meters for the cattle then they drop down to about 4 meters deep. I was standing right on the edge of the slope. Then Brooks disappeared and by the time he resurfaced it was to late to save me, I hit the water as he pulled me in. All I heard before I hit the water was his belly laugh.
I kicked my way up to the surface coughing and spluttering. His back was still turned when I resurfaced so I crept up on him and pounced on his back, he stubbled forwards but caught himself. He shuffled me around so I was straddling him from the front now, "What do you think your doing?" he said with a cheeky smile. I just giggled, "you cant keep the truth from me!" he said in a fake angry voice and shook my shoulders like you would to a child. He was always so gentle with me. I couldn't think of anyone else to be the father of my child.
The sun was starting to set and we were on our way home in a comfortable silence.
"Babe what do you think about having kids?" I asked as we rode into the front yard.
"yeah I want kids just maybe not now, I mean we are still only young, we have all of forever to worry about kids," he said and I felt my eye brows drop in slight disappointment. He dismounted and walked over to my horse. He reached up and smoothed out the crease between my brows, "What baby girl talk to me."
"It's nothing don't worry about it," I said before dismounting the opposite side to where Brooks was standing.
"Thanks," he said as he took the mare from me. I looked at him confused, "Thanks you for today, I really needed it," he said with a sly smile.
I felt a slight cramp reminding me of the life that I know carry and and ache in my heart reminding me of the love I had now for both, Brooks and our Baby, "I'm pregnant," the words just fell out of my mouth and a tear rolled down my cheek.
Brooks turned to me, "what did you say?" he yelled from over near the stables.
Feeling the sudden urge to shout to the world, "I'm pregnant!" I yelled to him. It took a while for those words to sink in. He looked me in the eye from so far away. He dropped the horse leads and ran to me. A huge smile plastered on his face. He collected me in a huge hug, spinning me around and around, and I laughed out in joy.
He placed my feet back on the ground, "I know that I said what I said, but with the whole Hayley and Nathan thing I didn't want you to feel pressured into having kids," he said all flustered, a smile so big plastered on his face.
"You're a silly man Brooks, lucky I love you," I said placing a quick peck on his lips.
He place his hands on my small bump, "I'm gunna be a dad," he said and I could see his eyes start to water. He was crying.
Then I started blubbering as he bent down to kiss the bump, "we're going to be a family." Then out of no where I hear a sharp bar and the horse take off. I looked over to see Bo in his cage with his tung hanging out, and I would say he was smiling. Brooks and I look at each other before laughing and start running after the horses.
