Little Things

Third Person POV

   "Sammy, what do you think it feels like to die?" Claire asked her best friend who sat next to her, holding her hand tightly.

   "I'm not sure." Sam said, his grip on the girls hand tightened.

  "Do you think it's painful?" Claire asked turned her head slightly to the side.

   "I wish I knew." Sam mumbled.

   "I wish we knew when we died. Then we could prepare for it." Claire said with a small shrug.

   Sam shook his head at that statement.

   "I would hate to know when we would die. This looming knowledge will just be stuck with you until one day it comes true." Sam replied.

   Claire eyed her best friend.

   "I could see that." She spoke softly before turning her gaze back up to the white tile above.

   There was a small silence between the two best friends.

   It wasn't a weird silence though.

   It was simply silence.

   Though through the silence both knew tears were building up behind their eyes.

   "You know I love you right Sammy." Claire spoke out of the blue.

   Sam looked up at Claire to see her looking at him with a certain look.

   He didn't like that look.

   "I love you too Claire." Sam replied, clutching the girls hand impossibly tighter.

   "I think I'm ready now." Claire spoke with a soft smile, a few tears falling out of her eyes.

   Sam shook his head as tears laced his cheeks.  

   "No." He spoke.

   "Don't miss me too much okay." Claire said reaching up and putting her hand on his cheek.

   Sam bit down onto his lower lip to try and conceal the sobs that wanted to leave his lips.

   "Nurse!" Sam yelled out.

   "Goodbye Sam." Claire said giving the boy one last weak smile.

   "Nurse come quick!" He yelled louder.

  He looked back at his friend who was softly rubbing her thumb across his cheek, collecting the fallen tears.

   "Goodbye Claire." He whispered as more tears fell.

   Claire's hand fell from the boys face and fell limp to her side.

   The smile on her face didn't drop and her eyes didn't close.

   "Nurse!" Sam yelled out at as the long beep rang through the room.

   The nurses were too late.
