Chapter 5: shattered innocence

"Alright remember we attack tonight. We'll do a lot of damage to the east wing of the palace and make it look like a serious attack but our target is the royal chambers"

"But the King and Queen are far too strong for us." A thief said and he made a good point they were the strongest in the nation

"Not to worry. My source tells me that they are left for medicine and are over a days travel away from the castle. All that's there is the princess."

"So then what do we do. Kill her?"

"No killing the princess now would be a waste... but we don't have to keep her in one piece heh heh."

Late at night Sophie was already in her night gown and putting princess Lilian to bed.

She reminded her that her parents would be home tomorrow night and to sleep tight

As Sophie got in bed she fell asleep as well

But not for long

In the east wing of the castle

"FIRE THERE'S BEEN A FIRE!" A maid screamed

"We're being attacked. Protect the castle!" A knight said

Maids were rushing in and out of the castle trying to put out the fire while some knights protected them while others fought off the attackers with the help of the maids with combat experience.

"Huh what's going on?" I asked

"Miss Sophie stay in your room. We've been attacked. We'll be right outside the room with you and the princess. And guards are at the end of the hall." The knight said

For some reason this knight didn't sit well with me but I chose to follow his advice for now. I went into my room and pulled out my old hunting knife while strapping my self defense knife to my leg.

Whatever was going on wasn't just a frontal attack.

"I should go check on the princess."

Someone was attacking the castle

I didn't know who but the fire was clearly a diversion and the head on attack likely was as well

But who.

"Why are you he-urk" a voice behind my door rang out before a clang and a thud. Someone just killed a knight and they were about to come into my room.

As Excella I wouldn't have even gotten up from my bed but as Lilian. I was scared I didn't know what they wanted but I couldn't defend myself if they tried something.

I waited for the attacker to enter my room but it never came instead the threat was already in my room

I was quickly yanked by a man who I guessed to be in his mid 30s.

"We got her." He said in a monotone voice

How did they get in without being detected wait... that voice sounded like a Gehnan commander back when I was Excella

I think his name was Graham but I don't remember what I do remember though was that he could use Rift magic.

He brought a squadron of soldier in to do what? Kidnap me kill me?
