Someone knocked on the door and we both froze.
Devon looked at me wide eyed. I looked at him with my heart in my throat. HE held his hands out to tell me to calm down. Someone knocked again. I looked under the door and saw a shadow. Devon grabbed my tap dance trophy of my dresser and made his way to the door. The bottom of the trophy lay in his hand cold and soft but heavy and strong since it was a block of marble. It could probably do more damage than you would think, but we never found out. Deon walked behind the door and motioned for me to pretend he wasn’t there. I walked up and opened the door while Devon stood behind holding the trophy up.
“Mom!” I nearly jumped out of my skin.
“Honey you look like you’ve seen a ghost. Are you okay? I heard a voice here. Is someone here?” She raised her eyebrow.
I looked up behind the door and Devon put the trophy down but held a finger to his lips.
I was on video chat with a classmate. We were working on a project.” I lid. “When did you get home? I didn’t hear the door. “ I said walking into the hall giving Devon a chance to breathe and clean up his things.
“A few minutes ago. I could have sworn that I heard another person actually here. It didn’t sound like a video chat. Come to think of it I heard another pair of feet walking. Are you sure you’re not lying to me?” She looked me I the eye. I could see her tired face and her worry.
“Um…yea. I was my friend Devo---Dennis. Dennis Von. Dennis Von. He’s new to the school and we got paired up to work on a project with Aiden too. But I told him I had to use the bathroom…” I looked back and saw a paper fall off my desk. Devon must have moved and caused the paper to fall.
“Something just moved.” My mother’s eyes went wide. “Mia get the baseball bat.” She whispered and hid behind the doorframe.
“Mom it’s probably just the wind or a paper I left wrong that fell.” I tried to cover up and keep her from beating Devon senseless.
“Get the bat!” She scream-whispered.
I walked downstairs as slowly as I could to get the bat. As soon as I went up the stairs my mother grabbed the bat and threw the door open. Winced thinking that if Devon was behind the door he would have a broken nose.
I watched my mother walk in my room with the baseball bat. I realized my mother would not stop until she found something.
I pulled out my phone from my pocket, sent a quick message and hoped it would work.
Seconds went by and I heard my laptop begin talking.
“Are you done in the bathroom yet?”
My mother al but jumped. She swung the bat around and I had to hold a laugh in.
“Who’s there?” She yelled.
“Uh Ms. Anderson. “ My mother turned around with her face white and looking for the voice.
Her arm went down with the bat when she saw my laptop on my bed.
“Aiden!” My mother’s voice was relief. “You’ve been talking to Mia?”
“Yea he lied. We’ve been talking for a while now. She said she needed to go to the bathroom and I’ve been waiting for her.”
My mother laughed. “Well I told her to get a bat. I thought someone was in the house.” She looked at the bat then back at Aiden. “Mia! Aiden’s waiting for you!”
