"Devon is not in our custody any more. He was released a few days ago I believe two actually." The woman on the phone said. "What did you say your name was?" She asked.
I left out a breath and saw the cloud that the cold air formed. "Mia Burkes." I continued walking to class. Xavier had already left and I did not see a way to talk to him. Not that moment.
My heart was broken and I felt weak. The guy I had let into my life so easily and came to trust now kept me out of his and I didn't know what to do. I knew it was part my fault. I should have told him when I knew but I didn't. I waited too long and now the bandage was ripped off and hurt more
"Ms. Mia?" The woman on the phone brought me out of my thoughts.
"Yea? Sorry." I replied.
"Mr. Devon asked for us to give you a number to you and only you to contact him. he moved cities but he didn't give us an address to contact him." She gave me the number and I thanked her.
I got through class with my mind on what happened. Xavier was sitting next to me in class but he didn't look at me. After school ended he rushed out and didn't wait for me. i went to my locker and found Hailey there.
I gave her a look. She knew it didn't go well.
"I'm sorry Mi. I didn't think anything would happen. I can't believe that he actually reacted that way when he found out. but then again with Becky."
"Don't even." I held my hand up. "He broke up with me because of something she said and I guess it's true. I should have told him sooner."
"But you told him and that's the good thing. You did tell him." She tried to help. I opened my locker and took my coat. Hailey held my bag while I put on my coat and scarf. "Thanks." I told her taking my bag back.
"I need to call Devon." I told her.
"Isn't he still in Florida?" She asked as we walked out of school.
"I called the jail and they said he had been let out. He finished his time there and all he left was a phone number in case I called." We continued walking.
"Wait so you have the phone number?" She asked and I nodded. "Then call!"
"Fine." I said pulling out my phone from my pocket. I took out the paper with the number I had scribbled on that the lady had given me. My phone began to ring and I can promise you that everything went silent. There were no cars driving by, Hailey for once was quiet and all I heard was the phone ringing.
Once
Twice
Three times
On the fourth ring I heard the line click.
"Hello?" A voice came through.
"Hi." Was all I could say.
"Mia?" The voice said.
I nodded then realized that the person could't see me nodding. "Yea. It's me."
"You called back. I tought you just came once and then disappeared." At that moment I knew for sure it was Devon. His voice and accent made it obvious.
"I got sick the next day and couldn't make it." I kicked my shoes against the sidewalk. "I'm sorry."
"It's okay." I could hear him smile through the phone. "So you're calling about the story aren't you?"
