Derek had no choice but to follow the strange man. Although he was quite relieved of not having to continue fighting with the girl he'd encountered.

After walking a short distance Derek realized it was going to be a long couple of days. Ailiyah never mentioned anything further about their near death situation she just slowly nodded at the strange man as she walked in step with him to where he insisted was a safe place to make camp.

John continued to speak strange words and theories when Derek heard a rustle in the underbrush. Coming face to face with a frightened little girl Derek was determined to do some good to prove to Ailiyah that he was no harm when the devilish child bit into his arm and drew blood. Shoving the girl off of him with all his strength, he grabbed a small sharp rock and crouched into his defense position.

" Dear . . . . . Oh . . . . . . . she has some sharp teeth." Derek mumbled as the small child ran into the woods. He inspected his arm then ripped a piece of cloth off his jacket and tightly wrapped his wound.

" I suggest you listen to me next time if you don't want to encounter anything worse," John said looking sternly at Derek when he'd finished wrapping his wound.

They continued in silence after that, not acknowledging each other's presence except when changing direction.

Derek was left to his thoughts, as they traveled the last three miles John insisted was to the campsite.

"Here we are, home sweet home, " John announced proudly.

Derek's face fell. The campsite John was so proud of, was a small dirt clearing in the middle of the forest. But it did have a small stream near by and some fallen branches and long vines.

They quickly set up camp and ate a light dinner of some roots and berries Ailiyah had found hoping tomorrow would bring a fresh start.
