"But mom! I don't want to go to camp! That's for babies!" Kim whined.
"Relax, Kimmy. You'll have fun and make lots of new friends." Her mother told her.
"No I won't. And don't call me Kimmy." She huffed as she put more things into her duffel bags.
She was less than thrilled with her mother when she signed her up for summer camp. Kim wasn't the outdoorsy type, she was the type that would rather sit around all day and read. As she was throwing her bags in the trunk of her mother's van, she grumbled to herself. Her father couldn't help but laugh.
"You'll be fine, sweetie. Camp is a lot of fun. Your mother and I used to go there when we were younger."
"But you guys are old now. That was like a million years ago." She moaned.
"How about you read your book and we'll tell you when we get there?" He father said, raising an eyebrow.
"Fine." She pouted, sulking down in her seat with her copy of the book "Shiloh"
Every five minutes, she would ask if they were there yet and her parents kept telling her no. When she got bored with her book, she leaned her head against the window and peered out it.
"Goodbye to my social life for the next eight weeks." She whispered to herself.
"Social life? You're ten!" Her father joked.
"Real funny, daddy. I have friends too, you know! And for the rest of the summer all except the last two weeks, I won't be able to see them! I might as well call my life quits."
"You'll make new friends. Your father and I did. The camp is where we actually met. Trust me, you'll have lots of fun." Her mother said, not looking back.
"But I won't have a phone, so no I will not be having fun. That's called having no life."
After an hour of driving, they finally reached the town the camp was in and found the road it was on.
"Hunny, there's something mommy should tell you about this camp." Her mother began. When Kim looked out the window, she made a disgusted face.
"EW! BOYS!" She screeched and dove onto the car floor.
"It's a girls and boys camp. But the cabins are on opposite sides." Her mother finished, holding back a laugh.
Kim had to practically be nudged into the mess hall, so she could sign in and receive a name tag. Her parents and a couple counselors were bringing her stuff inside.
"What's your name?" A girl with dark orange hair sitting at the table asked. Kim just stood there and made a face.
"This is our daughter, Kimberly Burgess. It's her first year." Her father said.
The girl was flipping through the camper list and checked off Kim's name.
"Welcome to Camp Riverwalk." She smiled, looking back at Kim's parents and then over at her.
"We have to go now, sweetie. Please promise us that you will write often?" They asked, rubbing her back.
"I will. Just don't call me Kimmy or Kimberly. It's Kim, m'kay?" She looked up at them. They each gave her a hug and exited the mess hall. The girl had made a name tag for her.
"You see the softball field up there?" She asked, pointing to a field up on a hill.
"Yeah." Kim said, softly.
"That's where other campers and counselors are. We're just playing games until everyone arrives. Doesn't that sound like fun?"
"I guess so." Kim shrugged her shoulders.
"It's okay to be a little upset being away from home for the first time. But trust me when I say that once the summer is over, you're not going to want to leave. I felt the same way every year when I was a camper here." And with that, Kim walked slowly up to the field, shoulders slump and an unamused look on her face. She didn't feel like joining any games, so she sat by herself next to a group of girls who were just sitting there talking.
"Hey! What's your name?" One of the girls asked.
"I'm Kim."
"Come sit over here with us." She offered.
"Really?"
"Yeah really." The girl motioned for her to come over and she did.
"Leslie Shay." The girl introduced herself as.
"Kim Burgess."
"Kim, this is Gabriela Dawson, Erin Lindsay and Sylvie Brett. Everyone, this is Kim."
They all smiled and waved to her.
"Hi guys. Is this the first year for you guys too?"
"Yeah, well not for me anyway. I have an older brother who's been coming here for like eight years now. He dragged my mom into letting his little sister come this year since I'm old enough." Gabriela replied.
"Who's your brother?" Kim asked.
"You see the geek over there with the boxing SnapBack on? That's him. His sweatshirt is the one that says 'Dawson' on the back."
As she was saying that, he looked back at them.
"What are you looking at Tony the Tiger?" She mocked.
"Not much." He said as his buddies laughed. When he turned away, Gabby shook her fists at him.
"He's such a moron." Erin rolled her eyes.
"I can only imagine what he's planning for the summer." Sylvie muttered.
"Not if we get to him first." Gabby said, smiling evily.
Suddenly, a foam ball that was being used in one of the games came flying and hit Kim in the head. A boy came running over to catch it. When he noticed she had been hit by it, he laughed.
"That's not nice! I got hit in the head with that!" Kim yelled at him.
"Oh boo hoo. You got hit in the head with a foam ball. Are you going to cry for mommy and daddy now you big baby?" He asked.
"Adam, shut up before I punch you." Sylvie threatened.
"You don't scare me." He said, taunting her.
Sylvie stood up. "You want to say that again, Ruzek?" She kept getting closer and closer to him.
He started backing up.
"Antonio, get Moron One out of here please!" Gabby glared at him from across the field. Adam ran back off to the game he was playing and Sylvie sat back down.
"I'm sorry, Adam is a big jerk." Leslie told her, trying to get her to laugh. But all Kim did was half smile.
"Hey, cheer up girly. Let's just hope we're all in the same cabin." Leslie hoped.
"Please. Then we can all plot evil things to do to the boys!" Sylvie said, making the girls laugh.
