The surgeon assistant ran in the room, starting an i.v. even after Will called it. He pumped an entire gallon of blood into Julie.
"Come on!" He yelled, trying to shock her awake.
Will came walking in. "Michael, she's gone."
"I won't give up!"
"Michael, STOP!"
"NO!"
He rested a hand on Michael's shoulder. "She's gone. We did what we could, but it wasn't enough."
Michael turned around, punching the wall.
"Why are you so insistent that she's still alive?"
"She's my little sister."
"I never knew that..."
"I don't want to accept that she's gone...she was still a baby."
"I wish there was something I could do. I'm sorry..."
"I just don't know how I'm gonna explain it to our parents. She was the youngest."
"Give it time. You need to grieve on your own before you gather up the strength to tell anyone else."
They both took one last look at Julie's body before leaving the room. Kim was crying the whole way home. Getting so worked up from crying, she started coughing and almost threw up.
"You're gonna make yourself sick." Adam looked away from the road for a split second, but turned back.
"I can't help it..."
"I don't blame you, I'm devastated too. Crying this much is going to make yourself sick."
When they pulled in the driveway of their house, she wiped the rest of her tears away. She tried smiling, but it was just too painful. With the kids not being there, it was too quiet for her liking. She curled up on the couch and continue to cry. Adam sat next to her and held her hand, trying to calm her.
"How will I be able to go to work and face that empty desk every day? I can't do it..."
"She wouldn't want this."
"Wouldn't want what?"
"Julie wouldn't want for you to be sad."
"She's dead!" Kim yelled as she buried her face into his chest.
"She wouldn't want to be sad because she died, she would want you happy. She went in there so you wouldn't have to, she risked her life for her best friend."
"That should be me who's lying dead on that table, not her!"
"Don't talk like that. Family protect each other, and that's just what she did. She protected her sister."
"Emmy and Liam are without their mother, Alec is without a wife."
"She risked her life to save one of our own."
"She was a mother and a wife! Her family is without her now and it's ALL my fault!"
"Take a minute and just take a deep breath. I'll go make you something to eat. Okay?"
She turned on the TV as he went into the kitchen. The first thing that showed up was a live news report from the bank. She quickly switched the channel. After taking no interest in anything on, she turned it off and set the remote on the coffee table. She wrapped the blanket around her as she got up and went into the kitchen. While Adam was preparing the meal, she came up behind him and wrapped her arms around him. He stopped what he was doing and intertwined his hands with her, making her smile.
"I love you." He whispered into her ear.
"I love you more." She somberly half smiled as he turned around and kissed her.
"How about we go get the kids and have a family night? It's not like they have school in the morning." He offered.
"My parents can take care of them. After all, this is technically our honeymoon. How about we have a night of just us?"
"Oh yeah." A smirk grew on his face.
"How about I go change into that little bathing suit you bought me and meet you out at the pool?" She whispered into his ear.
"I like that idea."
"Good." She kissed him and then headed upstairs.
When she got back downstairs, he was sitting in one of the deck chairs. She snuck up behind him, scaring him so bad he fell out of the chair. She started to laugh.
"You are gonna pay for that, missy." He picked her up.
"Don't you dare!"
He tossed her into the pool. She came right back up. "That wasn't cool!"
He shrugged his shoulders. "I thought it was."
"Get in here." She smirked at him and he dove in. He slid her top off and flung it onto the deck. When he decided outside was enough, he carried her inside and up to their bedroom.
"Ready for round two?" He asked with a big grin on his face.
"That shouldn't even be a question. Get over here." She pulled him on top of her and began kissing him.
The next morning she woke up wrapped in his arms. The sun was shining bright through the window, so she turned to face him. He was still sound asleep. To wake him up, she placed a gentle kiss on his forehead.
"Hey you." He smiled and returned the kiss.
She snuggled closer to him. "Guess what today is?"
"What's that?"
"It was this exact day, twenty years ago that we met."
"Did you imagine that we would be where we are now?"
"Never in a million years."
"Are you happy we met?"
"Of course I am. I love you more than anything."
