A week passed before Kim returned to work. When she got upstairs, everyone stared at her as if she had walk into class late or something.
"You feeling any better now?" Erin asked her.
"I'm still a little shaken up, but I'll be fine."
"Jay and I want to you to know how much we appreciate what you did for Mikayla."
"It was nothing."
"Thank you, so much."
"Anytime."
The guys all went out for lunch, but the girls stayed at the district so they could tidy up a bit. Kim was cleaning off her desk when she started feeling lightheaded.
"Everything okay?" Julie asked.
"Oh yeah, everything's fine."
"You look a little pale, maybe you should sit down." Erin pulled out a chair.
"You're skipping breakfast again, aren't you?"
"I ate. It came right back up about twenty minutes later though. Maybe it was just undercooked."
"What did you have for breakfast?" Julie thought.
"Waffles and a fruit salad, why?"
Erin and Julie exchanged glances and silent thoughts for about five minutes. Then they both looked back at Kim.
"You know what this means, right?" Erin raised an eyebrow.
"You're not running a fever or anything. You were sick this morning. Have you an Adam...been fooling around if you catch my drift?" Julie asked.
"Well...yeah." She started turning red in the face.
"You might be-"
Kim stood up. "No, that's not even possible! Don't say that!"
"Have you guys been using protection?" Erin sat back down at her desk.
"No..."
"Yeah, you're pregnant." Julie said.
"Nope. Not possible. Nope. I won't believe it." Kim turned her computer on.
Erin looked over at Julie. "She's in denial."
"I know for a fact that she is. Wasn't that the same way you reacted when you found out you were pregnant with Mikayla?"
"Exactly."
After work that day, Kim stopped by the drug store to pick up a pregnancy test. She wanted to prove them wrong. Laura was in line behind her.
"Kim, is that you?" She turned around.
"Oh hey Laura!"
"You feeling alright? Erin told me you weren't feeing too good earlier."
"I'm fine."
"That's great to hear."
Kim was pacing back and forth in her bathroom after taking the test. To distract herself, she started dinner before going back in to look at it. When she picked it up, she put her hand over her mouth. There was a knock on the door, startling her and she flung the test in the trash. She covered it up with paper towels so no one would catch sight of it. It was Erin at the door.
"Hey Erin, everything okay?"
"Yeah. I just wanted to check on you to see how you're feeling now. You didn't look too good at work this morning."
"I know why I wasn't."
"Why?"
"I'll show you."
She dug the test out of the trash and showed Erin.
"Whoa..."
"That's what I said. Hank is going to be furious."
"No he won't. He didn't do anything to me when I told him. He shouldn't have a problem with it. You might end up on desk duty, but you do need to tell a certain someone."
"Who?"
"Who do you think?"
"How am I going to tell him?"
"Have him come over here, sit him down and calmly explain to him. That's what I did when I had to tell Jay."
"Should I tell him now or wait?"
"It's better he knows now so he can prepare."
"I'll call him."
"I have to head home now, I usually read Mikayla a bedtime story before she goes to sleep. She'll throw a fit if I don't." Erin laughed. "You have my number, so text or call anytime. Okay?"
"I will, thank you."
Erin left. Adam was there within ten minutes of the phone call.
"What's up?"
"Get in here." She grabbed him by the arm, pulled him in the house and shut the door behind him.
"What's this all about?"
"I have something that I need to tell you."
"What is it?"
She showed him the test. "See for yourself."
His eyes went wide. "Is it...mine?"
"Yes."
"How did this happen?"
"Are you stupid?"
He laughed. "Well I know how it happened, I just can't believe it."
"Are you happy?" She was beginning to worry.
"Of course I am! It's just that this is happening all so sudden. Are you sure we're ready to be parents?"
"I think we are."
"Should we tell our parents?"
"I think they would love to hear about this. You remember the diary I used to carry around with me? I constantly wrote about how much I had a crush on you and how you would be my future husband someday. And that we would have a family and live happily ever after. This is our chance."
"Do you still have that diary?"
"Of course. It's in my box of camp memories. You want to look at it?" She asked, going into the closet.
He followed her. The box was heavy, so he offered to take it for her. They both sat down on the living room couch and he opened the box. She reached for the photo album and opened it.
"Is that you and Shay?" He asked.
"Oh my gosh yeah, it is. That was us on prank night. Look, it's you and Jay in the background."
"What the hell were thinking with our clothing choices back then?"
"I don't even know."
They laughed.
She laid down and he rubbed her stomach.
"We can't wait to meet you in nine months, peanut." She smiled at him and it wouldn't leave her face.
