The next morning, the kids were out on the playground at recess. When recess was over, everyone but them went inside.
"Shouldn't we go inside with everyone else?" MacKenzie asked.
"No one will notice." Mikayla said, climbing on top of the monkey bars.
"We'll get in big trouble." Brayden told her.
"I think we should go inside." Hannah tried to make a move for the door, but MacKenzie grabbed her arm.
She heard a noise in the bushes, so she etched away from Mackenzie to inspect. She found a man with blondish hair and he stood tall.
"Hello little girl." He said.
"You're a stranger." She started to back up.
"I'm a doctor. I'm the good guy."
"What's your name?"
"Gregory Yates."
She started backing up.
"Don't be afraid. I need help."
"Help with what?"
"Finding my puppy."
"Oh, okay. I'll help you." She began to walk closer to help search.
When she wasn't looking, he hit her in the back of the head with a tire iron. She hit the ground with a thud and the other kids came running. Greg was not pleased with what had come, so he grabbed the tire iron again and knocked the others unconscious. Once they were all thrown into his backseat, he tossed the iron in the trunk of his car and took off.
It was only a half day at school, so Erin went to pick the kids up.
"Hello Mrs. Halstead. Who are you here to pick up?"
"I'm here to pick up Mikayla, Mackenzie, Hannah and Brayden."
"Of course." She called out their names, but no one in the classroom looked up.
"Where are they?"
"That's strange. Has anyone seen Mikayla, Mackenzie, Brayden or Hannah?"
"No." A little girl said. "I saw them at recess, but that was this morning."
"I never saw them come inside." Another little girl said.
"Damn it." Erin whispered and went outside to the playground. She looked all around and was about to give up, when something shiny caught her eye. She walked over to it and picked it up.
"Oh no..."
"What's wrong?" The secretary asked.
"This is Hannah's charm bracelet." She looked down on the ground and noticed blood. "Dear god..."
Erin could hardly speak when she got back to the district. Hank was putting up the mugshots of suspects in a bank robbery case, everyone had their eyes on him. Mascara was leaking down her face and her eyes were red. Antonio looked over at her.
"What's going on?" He asked.
"Can I...um, talk to you guys for a minute?"
They all turned around and gave her their attention.
"I found this next to some blood today." She lifted up her hand, showing the bracelet.
"If that's what I think it is, someone is going to have their throat slit." Kim got up and went over to get a closer look.
Erin handed it to her and she started crying. "This is the bracelet I got Hannah for her birthday."
"Yeah yeah yeah. I'll be sure to tell them." Kevin said, hanging up the phone and then standing up,
"Who was that?" Hank asked.
"Someone said they saw a white male outside the school this morning. He was in a forest green minivan. It appeared that he had four children with him, three female and one male."
Adam was coming out of the break room, a coffee in hand. "What's going on? Who do I need to kill?"
Jay slammed his fist down on his desk. "Someone abducted the kids!"
Adam dropped his coffee, the glass broke and the coffee splattered all over the floor. Without saying a word, he grabbed his coat and flew down the stairs. Platt said something to him, but he stormed out and went to the store across the street from the school.
"How about you try calming down?" The cashier behind the counter said.
"Do you have cameras aimed at the playground?"
"Not directly at it, but we do have a camera outside aiming in that direction. Why?"
"I need to see the footage from this morning!"
"That's confidential."
He grabbed the guy's shirt. "I'm not in the mood for this. I need to see that footage."
"That's confidential video."
"Show it to me, now!"
"Huh?"
"I'm a police officer. I demand to see that footage."
"I understand, sir. What is your reasoning for wanting to see it?"
"My children, plus the child of another detective, and the child of two firefighters were abducted."
"What does that have to do with me?"
"Your security cameras might have footage of the abductor."
"I'm going to need proof of your status before I do such a thing."
Adam took his badge out. "Now give me the footage!"
"Y-yes sir." He took him to the back of the store. He showed him the footage captured by the camera.
"Whoa whoa whoa, go back and then pause it."
The cashier rewound the footage. A clear picture of Yates was on the screen. They took a closer look, and could see blood dripping from the tire iron in his hand. The backseat was in a shadow, so neither of them could see inside.
"Will you need this video tape?" The cashier looked up at him.
"I'll bring it to our tech guy and he can decipher the tape. He'll be able to brighten up the back so we can see in."
"My boss is going to freak when he finds out I showed this to you."
"This is helping in a criminal case, I'll make sure he lets it go."
"I could lose my job for this."
"You won't." Adam grabbed the tape and sped out of there.
