CHAPTER TWELVE

CHAPTER TWELVE

RAFE KNEW HE WAS FUCKED FROM THE MOMENT HE SAW HER. 

The way her curls flowed in the air, care free spirit dancing around her. The freckles lining her face since the first time he saw her at the party.

It was that same girl just this time she was laying in a hospital bed her skin pale and her face lifeless.
He was simply interested in her hippy-vibe. Now she didn't seem full of life.

Rafe looked in her direction when he heard movement, his eyes landing on her parents few feet away from her hospital bed her mom crying and her dad withholding the tears forming in his eyes. He wanted to join them but felt guilty for leaving her in the first place. He shouldn't have left, maybe he could have changed the outcome if he had just listened to her explanation.

He felt like a coward, He was a coward.

And what do cowards do? They walk out. So he left to his car sat there until he felt ready to see her. He couldn't stand the way her eyes wouldn't open or how pale her body was. He rested his head upon the wheel. Only looking up when he heard a tap.

He looked up to see his sister standing there her face still tearful. "Can you take me home?" She asked in a raspy voice. "I wanted to wait here but dad said I should go home." She says.

He grumbled a response telling her to get in. "Did you see her? She was so pale. I was waiting for her to open her eyes and greet me but she never did." Sarah cried. Rafe didn't say anything but turned on the car and started to head home. He raised his hand to wipe a tear that had escaped his eye.

"She was fine this morning. Maybe she shouldn't have gone out-" Her mom rants to the doctor.

"Ma'am she's doing fine right now all we can do is wait for her to wake up. It's like she's sleeping she can only wake up when she's ready. Once she's up she can get started on getting treated." The doctor says trying to calm her down.

"Treatment? But she missed the appointment isn't it to late?" She asked.

"Technically she could have started at any time as she's been showing substantial progress." He paused before he continued. "In a couple years she might be able to stop taking her insulin if her body reacts well."

"Wow." Lisa spoke looking down. Watching as her husband waves the doctor off with a thank you. He leans down to kiss her forehead. "Let's get some rest yeah?" He says. She nods her head before looking back to her daughter.

When Olivia woke up she was alone. She came to the sight of a familiar hospital room. The sounds of beeping and the very uncomfortable dress she was currently wearing.

She started to move around in the itchy dress and it was only then she saw the figure. She knew exactly who it was.

Rafe was in the corner mumbling when he looked up. Olivia making eye contact deciding  she was still very mad that he walked out without giving her a chance to explain.

"Olivia you're up!" He said frantically before he continued. "Hold on I'm gonna get the doctor." He rushed out of the room and only about a minute later returned with the doctor.

"Hey Olivia. How you feeling? Did you get good sleep?" The doctor laughs at his joke looking back up. When he notices she doesn't laugh he goes silent as she smiled awkwardly at him. "I'm gonna go call your parents." He said backing out the room.

"I'm so sorry if hadn't left you probably wouldn't be here-" Rafe began.

Olivia interrupted him. "How did I get here?" She asked genuinely confused her voice was strained as she spoke. "Your mom she found you passed out on the floor.

"Rafe? He looked up and his eyes meet hers. "I was going to tell you. Then you walked out."

"I shouldn't have left. That's on my part you weren't obligated to tell me anything-" he starts. "I should have told you. Hell you even agreed to complete the bucket list with me."

"Was that the reason why you made it?" He asks. She nodded her head sadly. "My doctor suggested it to my mom because she told him that I don't go out much. I mean I only went out to go to checkups. When I went to that party I wanted to get drunk. It was the first thing on my list." She paused. "Then when I saw you and Sarah again everything just kinda fell into place."

"I didn't plan on seeing you again either. I had gotten into a fight with my dad so I went out. I was planning on getting high then leaving but I'm glad I stayed a little longer." He says. Looking back down to his lap. The two went quiet. Nothing to say it seemed already explained.

"I've decided to fully drop out of college." He spoke frantically, Olivia looked up still recovering from the comment. "You what?" She asked slowly. "I dropped out of college. For real this time, no break or anything. " He paused as he saw her shocked face. "It wasn't doing much for me. I don't know what I want to do with the rest of my life but I sure as hell won't sit and wait four years of my life to find out."

She was about to answer when they hear a throat clear she looks up and sees the doctor. "Sorry to interrupt but your parents are here." He says.

They watch as the doctor steps to the side and as her parents walk in. Her mom immediately rushing over. "How do you feel? Do you need water? Do you want me to-"She rushes out. "Mom I'm fine I'm just really tired." Olivia assures. "You've already been sleeping too long." She scolded.

"I actually advise her to-"The doctor starts but shuts up when her mother gives him a death glare. "Well Olivia I've run some tests and I've come to the conclusion that you had a seizure." He said.

Olivia looks at him with a confused face. "It's come to my understanding that you were alone that night?" He asks which she nods.

Rafe looked down to his lap. "I should go." He spoke standing up. Olivia looks to him shaking her head. "Yea that's a good idea." Her father said nodding.

"No, dad he can stay." Rafe sits back down quickly. The doctor clearing his throat before speaking again.

"It's also to my understanding that you took your insulin?" She nods her head. "There it is." He says. Making everyone face him with a confused face. "But I'm supposed to take my insulin."

"Olivia but your body is reacting to the sugars your providing by eating, your getting better which means we need to change the dosage of insulin we give you. Your body reacted by a seizure because you heart was reacting to the amount of glucose in your body." He pauses. "I've talked to your parents about this but we think we can get you started on treatment. As for now all we have to do is give you a new dosage." He says smiling lightly.

As she takes in all the information a tear falls out of her eye she looks up to see Rafe with a confused face. She laughs lightly. He smiles at her. The doctor nods his head before exciting the room.

What started as a day a pain turned to a day full of hope and promise for her future.
