Flashback

"Sergeant Barnes..." says the voice of Arnim Zola standing over him. The minute he hears the voice everything that happened...his life before his life was no longer his came back to him, he could remember.

His mind brought him back to a time where he fell off of a moving train at the edge of a mountain, and it was the man on the bridge who had tried to rescue him...little did he remember the man on the bridge was Steve Rogers trying to save him.

"Bucky, no!" Steve shouts. Post fall he realizes he had been picked up by a few men so that meant he was saved...right? That was the last thing he could remember before blacking out.

"The procedure has already started..." Zola says staring down at the man. All Bucky could remember was seeing his arm that was no longer existent being replaced with the artificial arm. Zola and the other Hydra agents had amputated his left arm following the fall, and he was still trying to grasp that he actually defied death.

"You are to be the new fist of HYDRA."

Bucky tries his best to fight off all of Zola's men and it isn't long until he's given a sedative.

"Put him on ice..." Zola says as all of his men take Bucky to the Cryogenic freezer. From that point forward, that freezer was the Bain of Bucky's existence. Being frozen the first time couldn't nearly compare to the pain and suffering that had yet to come.

The Present

Once Bucky had snapped back into reality and realized he had been getting his arm fine tuned by a HYDRA agent, he knocks over the agent fixing his arm, and Rollins points his gun at him to stop him from attacking any further. In a moment's notice, Alexander Pierce enters the bank vault where the Super Soldier is being held.

"Sir, he's...he's unstable...Erratic." Says the scientist who had been in charge of Bucky at the moment. That's when Pierce enters with Brock Rumlow and some other HYDRA agents and goes over to Bucky.

"Mission report." Alexander says firmly as the soldier stares blankly into space. He didn't even give Pierce a response.

"Mission report, now." Pierce says as he moves closer to Bucky...seconds later he strikes Bucky hard in the face demanding an answer.

"The man on the bridge..." is the first thing he says. He remembered that face...he called Bucky by his name which didn't seem to matter much anymore.

"Who was he?" Bucky asks.

"You met him earlier this week on another assignment." Pierce Replies.

"I knew him." Bucky says. Steve Rogers was his name, unfortunately for The 100 year old man all he could remember was his face...He knew the man on the bridge seemed familiar to him.

Pierce sits in front of Bucky perturbed that he even remembered something about his past.

"Your work has been a gift to mankind. You shaped the century, and I need you to do it one more time..." Pierce says to the super soldier.

"Society is at a tipping point between order and chaos. Tomorrow morning we're gonna give it a push. But, if you don't do your part, I can't do mine, and HYDRA can't give the world the freedom it deserves." He says hoping his words were getting through to the man.

"But I knew him."

Pierce turns to the scientists even more bothered than he was the first time after hearing Bucky's remarks about Steve. Bucky knew there was something about that man that hit close to home for him, and Alexander Pierce wanted to remove that piece of home from him.

"Prep him." Pierce says without hesitation.

"He's been out of cryo-freeze too long." The scientist explains.

"Then wipe him and start over." Pierce says again.

Bucky wore a certain look on his face...being erased caused him pain. Not only physical pain, but Mental anguish and emotional pain.

In the eyes of Alexander Pierce it was damn near impossible for the old war hero turned evil, to feel anything.

That's why the minute Barnes mentioned Steve Rogers, Pierce knew his plan had been in danger...any time Barnes remembered anything at all, He knew the mission was in grave danger, hence erasing James Barnes so that the Winter Soldier could live.

The scientists strapped Bucky into the chair, and Bucky instantly knew what was going to come next...it was a sensation he was all too familiar with.

Memories work in a mysterious way for James Buchanan Barnes, when he remembers something about his old life, he almost feels human. When he can actually become human and think for himself a certain part of him feels liberated, but once James Buchanan Barnes is erased by a mere shock to the brain, every human quality he possesses is erased along with him.

As Alexander Pierce left the vault, the scientists placed a teeth shield in the man's mouth as if to place an muzzle on an animal. They begin the process of wiping the man's memories out, causing him that Physical...Emotional...Mental pain.

If there was any human like quality that he was permitted to act on, it was his ability to know and feel true pain.

Bucky started screaming in pain as shocks were delivered to him...That five seconds of James Buchanan Barnes is now nothing but a vague memory itself, and now this is the part where the Fist of Hydra comes to his senses and continues to do what he was made to do...kill and Exist.

The fist of Hydra could never be human...could he?
