Taehyung quickly woke up out of his reverie when he heard the sharp distinct knock of his advisor on his door. He quickly hid all the papers which held secrets of his plan to release the Djeran captives and cleared his throat, "In a minute."
He found the hollow space in his wall and quickly shoved the documents inside, and closed it up, replacing the potted plant in front of that area. It was one he made himself, knowing nobody could discover what he was planning.
Taehyung was the newly appointed king of the Bardacian Kingdom, one of the most powerful kingdoms in the country of Lazec. The Djeran Empire had been absolutely obliterated when the rest of the Kingdoms in the country teamed up and announced war against the empire, resulting in a massacre of the people there and the rest becoming captives or refugees. This had happened close to three years ago, when Taehyung's father was ruling, but the people of Djera still lived in fear for their lives.
Djera was a country known for its magical powers. All Djerans possessed some form of magic, and were able to manipulate the four elements of the earth. This was what made surrounding kingdoms afraid of them, and what their power could do. The fear of being controlled by magical beings they knew nothing of resulted in the joint attack to destroy Djera, which, at that time, was suffering from famine. The people were taken as slaves their citizens to do their bidding.
Those who managed to escape were refugees, and were either auctioned or killed when found.
And then there was Taehyung, who wanted to free the Djerans.
How could he not want to, after he fell in love with one?
But it's also basic rights. They were still humans, and deserved freedom. Djera never wanted to be a powerhouse anyway, and were trying to form diplomatic relationships with other countries, but it was the rest of them that attacked it first.
However, he knew his plan of freeing them, if approved by some miracle, was executed, the now free Djerans were most likely to try to take revenge. He couldn't blame them, but this was a strong counter point to his plan, and he needed to find another way to combat the issue.
Taehyung opened the door to see his advisor, Elder Agnello, standing rigidly in impatience. Taking a glance over at the young man's appearance, the elder nodded, "Put on your robe. It's time for your monthly visit to the dungeons."
The crown prince nodded, holding in a groan. He hated the dungeons. Nevertheless, he put on his robe and exited the room. One of the two bodyguards positioned outside his door immediately followed him as he made his way with Agnello downstairs.
"There were three Djeran refugees caught, and twelve Bardacians too, for various crimes."
Taehyung hummed, he had already checked the records, "Four needing death penalty right?"
Agnello hid a smile at the prince's diligence, "Correct. Two of the Djerans, because they refuse to be slaves, and two of the Bardacians, as they killed the owner of the club 'Zemer' in a drunken brawl."
"Provoked brawl?"
"The owner refused to give them more drinks because they couldn't pay, so they attacked him."
Taehyung nodded. The rest of the walk was in silence, and they reached the gate of the dungeons soon. A metal gate, made by a Djeran of the element earth manipulating the resources of earth to make the most secure gate possible. The guard at the post bowed respectfully to the prince, before unlocking the door and letting them in.
The familiar stench of sweaty bodies, grime and filth hit Taehyung's nose all at once and he could barely hold back wrinkling his nose. Agnello, on the other hand, did not bother hiding his disgust as they both descended down the steps to the basement- the dungeons.
The poorly ventilated and sanitised environment was punishment enough, in Taehyung's opinion, as he regarded the dark mouldy stains on the walls and the grimy look of every captive. Most of them looked at him warily, but some openly sneered.
He didn't react.
It was usually 3 prisoners to one jail cell, but the more dangerous ones were given a whole cell. As luxurious as it sounded compared to others, it wasn't. With both feet and hands shackled with Djeran made metal at all times, and exposed to abuse upon defiance, it wasn't exactly a nice life.
Putting it lightly, that is.
Taehyung moved to the Djeran cells. Two wind elementals and one fire. One of them sat in a docile manner, hands bleeding and tied, face bruised, showing he had been punched repeatedly. His hands were tightly locked behind his back so he couldn't use his powers, and the resigned look gave away that he was the one who gave in to slavery.
His heart went out for that man.
But he still kept up that mask of indifference, and moved to the next cell.
Agnello spoke up, "He summoned a tornado," jutting his chin towards the captive, "Nearly killed a soldier."
Another male, but he was beaten till unconsciousness. Face bruised to the point it was beyong recognition, and hands marred with scars and cuts. Still bleeding. It just looked like a mass of red to him - his fingers were clearly broken. Would he even be able to use them again? If he were to remain alive, that is....
Taehyung shuddered. He hated the dungeon.
But this just strengthened the resolve he had within him to come up with a plan to release the Djerans.
"The next one burned an entire field while trying to escape," the sheer hatred in the elder's voice made the prince look at him, "Killed two."
The last cell held the fire elemental. The moment his eyes landed on her, his heart stopped.
No.
The girl's hands were bleeding, all ten of her nails ripped off. A metal coil with sharp nails bound her hands tightly, constantly digging into her skin. They were shackled to the wall like all the other Djeran captives, and she sat on the floor with her hands up, her legs shackled and bleeding. Her head was bent down, her brown tangled hair covering her face. Clothes tattered, grime coating her legs and cuts in random parts of her body.
At that moment, she looked up, and he saw a bruise beginning to form on her chin, her lower lip swollen and bleeding. His eyes searched her face before meeting her cat eyes - ones ridden with raw pain and begging for a release.
Her eyes flashed with recognition.
A shaky breath escaped his lips as he stared at the captive brunette, his heart being squeezed painfully, "Jennie Kim."
His lover.
