Jennie was exhausted. Her boss had given her absolute hell today, itching for a moment to break her the moment she stepped foot in his office ten minutes late. To be fair, it was not her first time late but for someone who was also late himself, he really took her tardiness personally.
She grumbled - it's okay, she will overthrow him one day and take his position.
It was 6.03 p.m., at least he released her on time. Her back and heels ached as she walked towards her car, glad Jungkook was on time. Normally, she had her own car and would drive herself home, but it was being repaired and her boyfriend didn't like anyone touching 'his baby'.
And she liked having him pick her up and drop her off, she found it wholesome.
"Hi, jagi," she greeted tiredly, plopping her ass on the chair and shutting the door. She caught his gaze in the rearview mirror, before he quickly averted his eyes, "Hi."
"Everything okay?" she asked, concerned. He looked stiff and rigid. Not like the guy who would pick her up with a hug and a kiss, lighting up her day with a smile.
He flicked his eyes to her again, hand on the wheel, "Yeah."
Jennie bit her lip, "Oh okay."
She waited for him to strike up a conversation after he reversed the car out of the carpark, like he always did, ask her about her day or anything actually, but he didn't.
"So," she started, leaning against the headrest, lips curving into a smile, "How was your leave?"
Another brief glance, "Good."
"That's all?"
He looked like he wanted to add something on, his mouth twitching, but looked at her and went back to staring at the road.
Her heart clenched, "Are you mad at me?"
"We are going to the beach," he dodged her question, "Dropping by Tae's house first. You can change there."
"Oh, okay, what's the occasion?"
No response.
The brunette's palms tingled as she clutched her skirt tightly to stop her emotions from getting the better of her. Jungkook could be a petty person, she should just ask him what's wrong and leave him be.
Her exhaustion, however, was not cooperating with her rational thinking.
"Kook, what's wrong?"
She poked his arm gently, and he tsk-ed, inching away, "Can't you see I'm driving?"
That came out harsher than he had intended, so he looked away.
Her tongue felt thick as she let out an awkward, "Uh..."
Clearing her throat, Jennie attempted again, swallowing her frustration, "Jungkook, what happened? Did I do something wrong?"
"It's nothing."
She persisted stubbornly, "No, something happened. You have to tell me so—"
"God, I said it's nothing!" he slammed the wheel, accidentally making the car horn go on. He groaned, and a hand squeezed Jennie's heart painfully, and she immediately looked down, letting her hair cover her face.
"I..." but she didn't complete her sentence, choosing to look out of the window with glassy eyes.
Little did she know about the guilt eating the raven-haired man beside her alive.
"Shit," she heard him mutter, and she could imagine him raking his hand through his hair in frustration, "I can't do this anymore."
Her heart dropped. Literally dropped.
