The room phone rang and Shreya jumped. She hadn't given that number to anyone, so she wondered who was calling her, especially in the middle of the night. Maybe it was the receptionist. But why? Curious, she picked up.- "Good morning Shreya," a voice whispered that chilled her back. She didn't answer, unable to say a word. "Well, haven't you missed me?"
Shreya still couldn't utter a word. She couldn't believe he was on the other end of the phone. Wasn't he in prison? If that was the case, he shouldn't have been able to phone at this late hour. It was about three in the morning. No prisoner was allowed to phone so early in the morning. But even worse, how had he found it? How did he know she was in Mumbai, and in this hotel precisely?
She felt a cold sweat on her back when she realized something. Letters, anonymous calls. It all came from him. The threat was therefore very real, and much more serious than she initially thought. He had been after her since his arrest. She had been the only one capable of such a thing, thanks to her rage and determination. He had sworn revenge and now he was carrying out his revenge. She was in much more danger than she thought.
- "Shreya, I'm disappointed," he resumed. "I thought you would be happy to hear me. It's been so long."
- "What do you want Karan?" She asked in a voice that's hard and free from tremors.
- "Just check in Shreya," he replied in a sweet voice. "How long has it been, three years?"
- "Not long enough," she hissed. "I ask you again, what do you want?"
- "Have you received my letters?" He inquired. "I enjoyed writing them and hope you liked them."
- "I had them and I would like it to stop."
- "Oh, but I love writing to you so much sweetie. I heard that the STF had closed its doors, how sad," he said in a voice that was anything but sad. "But you got a better job as I understand it. Senior CID Officer, I'm impressed."
Shreya’s heart was racing, her hands were shaking. For the first time in a long time, she was scared, really scared. If Karan Bohra was free, whatever the reason, she was really in danger. The only thing she hoped for was that no other member of her old team was in danger. She couldn't stand anything happening to them. They were her family.
- "I know you ask yourself a lot of questions Shreya," he resumed after a few minutes of silence. "And I assure you, I haven't contacted any member of your old team, not even that dear Daya. I know he came back and I know he did it for you."
- "Leave Daya alone," Shreya grew angry, feeling anger rising in her at the idea that he might take it out on Daya. "You got it after me, not him."
- "Oh but I wouldn't do anything to your boyfriend," he assured. "As long as you don't tell him, he'll be safe. Maybe all'll be safe."
-" What do you mean?"
- "I won't do anything to them, for now. This must all stay between us Shreya, you and I. If I ever find out that anyone knows, I will no longer guarantee their safety."
There was total silence for a few seconds. During her time at the police academy, Shreya had learned that you should never negotiate with criminals. She had always tried to follow this rule. But today she had no choice. Lives were at stake, the lives of people dear to her heart. If she spoke to them, Bohra might come after them. She couldn't take that risk. They had spent years with the threat of a serial killer in their lives. He was dead now, they were free. She couldn't force this on them again, not now that they finally had a life. Unfortunately Nikhil knew about it. She had spoken to him, it was too late to change that.
