Daya was pacing up and down the prison doctor's office, a file in hand.

- "What do you mean the results are the same? What do you mean?" Daya inquired, staring at the doctor who still held the lab results in his hands. " It's impossible."

- "I'm sorry Mr. Daya," the doctor apologized, sincerely. "But there are no mistakes. It is Senior Inspector Shreya in this bed. The results are clear."

- "I refuse to believe it," Daya persisted.

The prison doctor had agreed to give Nikhil and Daya a sample of the patient's blood and hair a few days earlier. It had taken time because you had to be discreet. No one was supposed to know and thanks to Nikhil, they had found a discreet person in the lab to do the exam.

It had taken four days to get the results, four long days in which Daya thought he was going mad. He knew there was not much he could do, that he could only wait. But he was so afraid of losing her, of never seeing her again.

Shreya was his second chance, she was his chance to finally have a happy life. He loved her more than anything, more than his life. He couldn't imagine continuing without her, it was impossible. These tests were his last chance to prove that this woman in this bed was not Shreya. It was his chance to do the research to find her. Unfortunately the results were not what he expected. There he had proof that this woman was Shreya, even if he couldn't believe it.

- "I'm really sorry Mr. Daya, really sorry," the doctor whispered, putting a hand on his shoulder.

Daya walked away, running a hand through his hair. How could that be possible, how could she be in this bed? He hadn't even recognized her. How could he not recognize the woman he loved? He couldn't believe it. He blamed himself so much for not recognizing Shreya. He rubbed his eyes, tired. He couldn't go on like this, he had to get used to the idea that Shreya was in this bed, in serious condition. She needed him.

He turned to Nikhil who was staring at him sadly. He had to accept his mistake. He was wrong and he had to accept it, hard as it was. So he sank down on the nearest chair. Tears rolled down his cheeks without him doing anything to hold them back. Tears of guilt. He didn't recognize Shreya and he blamed himself. She needed him now and he had rejected her. And now he blamed himself.

He looked up at Nikhil who slowly approached him. The man put a hand on his shoulder, comforting him silently. Nikhil was a true friend. He was there for him, without asking for anything in return. He had always been there for him, all these years. He had always been there and Daya had never really realized it. Suddenly the door opened and a nurse entered.

- "Doctor, she's sinking," he said and the doctor ran off, leaving Daya and Nikhil in his office.

The two men followed him without a word. Daya felt his heart beat faster in her chest. It was Shreya, he knew that. She was the only patient in the infirmary. And she was doing badly. He had rejected her, hadn't recognized her and now she might die. He was going to lose another woman after his mother.

When he entered the infirmary, the doctor was giving Shreya a heart massage, shouting orders, trying to save her as best he could. He laid eyes on her, refusing to look away. And he prayed. He didn't believe in God, but he prayed for her, he prayed that she would come out, that she would live. He needed her too much.

The minutes passed Daya never taking his eyes off her. Then he saw the doctor stop the massage. Then came the sound that would haunt him for a long time, maybe even for the rest of his life. The sound of the machine informing him that her heart had given up. Shreya had just died in front of him.

Without anyone having time to react, he rushed to the bed and resumed the massage.

- "Do not die, you have no right," he cried, trying to make her heart start again. "You don't have the right to abandon me, you don't have the right to leave me alone. Come back Shreya, come back for me."
