Alexis sat for lunch with Scott the next day, "hey."

He watched her for a moment, "what's the matter? That doesn't look like the face of someone that had a hot date yesterday."

She half laughed, "yeah well. He apparently wasn't that into me. He didn't kiss me goodbye or even walk me up to my apartment. And he was super vague about seeing me again."

Scott sighed, resting his hand on hers, "I'm sorry. Maybe there was a reason. He didn't seem interested at all?"

She shrugged, "I don't know. We've been exchanging flirty texts for the last week. And he seemed like he was having a good time on the date. He took me to the harbor as we watched the ships with coffee and a blanket. It was super sweet and he said he wanted to see me again. But then got all weird at the end of the date. All I got was a kiss on the cheek and I haven't heard from him since." She shook her head, "oh well. Your brother seeing anyone?"

Scott laughed, "unfortunately. I'll let you know if it doesn't work out though."

She laughed, nodding, "I know. I'm kidding. Maybe it wasn't a date. Maybe I misread the situation." Why would he want to date her anyways. She sighed as they changed the subject to something else.

After a few days of still not hearing from Chris, Alexis decided to text him.

Alexis
I guess I misread the situation.
I was under the impression when you invited me out it was a date.
But the lack of communication points otherwise.

She watched the three dots appear and disappear a few times before finally disappearing. She sighed, setting her phone on the nightstand.

Chris read the message from Alexis as he groaned, trying to figure out what to say.

"What's the matter?"

He looked up to see Rachel come into the bedroom, "no. Nothing important." He sighed, laying back on the bed, staring at the ceiling.

*********************************************************

Alexis still hadn't heard anything after an hour so she messaged him one last time.

Alexis
Okay. Well thanks for the book at least.

******************************************************

Chris heard his phone ding again as he laid awake in bed. He heard Rachel snoring as he looked to see another message from Alexis. He still didn't know what to say. What do you say to someone you have feelings for when you already have someone? What does he tell Rachel: sorry, I know we've been dating for a few months, but I met a random girl in a coffee shop that I think I might be in love with. No hard feelings though. He shook his head, "idiot." He stared at his phone for a while before finally responding.

****************************************************

Alexis sighed as she received the message from Chris.

Chris
You're welcome.
And I *do* want to see you again.
It's just complicated right now.
I'm sorry Lexi :(

Alexis
Okay.
Well let me know if it ever gets *un*complicated

The Friday before Scott's birthday, Alexis let herself into her sister's house for dinner, "Erin?" She was greeted by her 6 year old niece, Isabella.

"Alexis!"

Alexis grunted as Isabella collided with her, "hello sweet Bella. How are you love?" She crouched down to Isabella to hug her before taking off her coat, greeted by her brother in law, Robert, "hey Robbie."

He smiled, kissing her on the cheek before taking her coat, "Erin is in the kitchen."

"Thanks." Alexis walked down the hall to the kitchen where she found her very pregnant older sister. "Hey!" Alexis immediately placed her hand on Erin's stomach, "how's my nephew?"

Erin groaned, "he's fine. But I can't wait for him to vacate the premises."

Alexis laughed as she noticed Erin watching her, "what?"

She shrugged, "and you? When are you going to settle down?"

Alexis rolled her eyes, "Erin. You were lucky to meet Robbie in college. I haven't been so lucky."

"I thought you had a date last weekend?"

Alexis nodded as she groaned, "yeah." She moved closer to Erin, lowering her voice, "you'll never guess with who. Not that it matters, because he doesn't seem that interested anymore."

"Who?!"

Alexis handed Erin her phone for her to look over the messages, "he just kind of goes cold, right?"

Erin nodded, "what does it's complicated mean?" She sighed, handing the phone back to her sister, "who was it?"

Alexis groaned, "you'll never guess. A few weeks ago I was in my coffee shop and I ran into someone, literally. And spilled coffee all over my book. I look up and it's Chris Evans."

Erin squealed, "what?!"

Alexis nodded, "yeah. We sat and talked for more than an hour. When I came back the following week there was a new book waiting for me and he put his number inside." She motioned to the phone, "but. I don't know what happened."

Erin nodded, "I'm sorry. But 'it's complicated' kind of sounds like 'I have a girlfriend.'"

She groaned, "yeah. That's what I was afraid of." She sighed, sitting at the table, "how could I have been so stupid to think he would ever be interested in me to begin with? It was probably some sort of joke."

"What?! Don't say that Alexis. You're beautiful and smart. And if he doesn't see that then that's his loss. You'll find someone. You're going to a party tomorrow aren't you?"

Alexis nodded, looking up at her, "yeah. It's my friends birthday."

Erin shrugged, "well then maybe you'll meet someone there."

Alexis sighed, putting her head on her hands on the table, "doubtful."
