Chapter 19

After salvaging what they could from Alexis's apartment, she threw the rest of it away. She finally got up the courage to go and see Joseph a few days after they got back. She knew Chris was busy so she went after work.

Joseph groaned as he opened the front door to see Alexis standing in front of him, "what do you want?"

She watched him leave the door open as she let herself in, "I thought we should talk Joey. And I wanted to apologize. And I thought you might want to as well."

He scoffed, "apologize for what?"

"For what? You ruined all my shit Joey!"

He shrugged, "I was looking for your book. I should have known when I saw the book that you weren't mine. Were you ever?!"

She groaned, "of course I was. I'm so sorry Joey." She stood in the living room as she watched him getting angrier.

"Were you sleeping with him the whole time?"

"No! I never slept with him! How can you even ask me that Joey?"

He shrugged, "I don't know! How could you just walk out on your wedding?! I thought you loved me!"

She looked at the ground, "I did Joey. I'm sorry. I loved him more. I wanted to be with him. I'm sorry. I had been denying my feelings for him for months."

He shook his head, grabbing her arm, "you expect me to believe that you just decided on a whim on the day of our wedding that you wanted to be with him? And that you weren't sleeping with him?"

"You're hurting me Joey! And yes! I fully intended on marrying you until he showed up before the wedding. I'm sorry! Now let me go!" She tried to pull her arm out of his grip. He let go as she did, making her fall back, hitting her back on the coffee table as she fell.

"Get out!"

She stood up, pain searing through her back as she did. She rushed out of his house and into her car before he could see the tears streaking her cheeks.

Alexis got out of the shower, trying to look at her back in the mirror when she heard Chris enter the bedroom. She quickly wrapped a towel around herself as he entered the bathroom.

"Hey love." He saw her wince as he placed his hand on her back as he kissed her cheek, "what?"

She shook her head, "it's nothing. I fell."

He looked down at the obvious hand grip on her arm, "what happened? Who did this Alexis?"

She felt the tears starting to sting again as she shook her head, "it's nothing. Please don't."

Chris sighed, grabbing the towel from her to display a giant bruise on her back, "who did this Alexis?! Did you go see Joey alone?"

She nodded, pulling the towel around her again as she watched him punch the wall. "It was an accident. I pulled my arm away from him and I fell back."

He shook his head, "no. It wasn't an accident! He shouldn't have been grabbing your arm like that in the first place! Why did you go alone?! After what he did to your apartment!"

She shrugged, "because I felt I owed him an actual face to face."

"No!" He sighed, trying to calm himself, seeing she was scared already. He wrapped his arms around her waist gently, "you don't owe him anything love. Not anymore. I don't want you seeing him by yourself. You hear me?"

She nodded, burying her head in his chest, "I'm sorry."

He groaned, "stop apologizing. If I had done things the right way to begin with, we would have been together long ago and you never would have been with Joey in the first place. Everything is my fault. I know it is."

"Please don't do anything Chris. You don't need that sort of press."

He sighed, "I know. Just promise me you won't go see him alone anymore Lex."

She nodded, "I promise."

A week later it was the Fourth of July and Chris decided to have a party.

Chris laughed, watching Alexis fuss over food in the kitchen, "are you nervous? You've been around my family a few times Lex."

She nodded, "I know. I know. But now we're married and we did it all backwards. What if they decide they don't like me? What if they're mad at me for stealing you away?"

Chris laughed, "you can't be serious. If anyone stole anyone, it was me stealing you. My family loves you. They have since they met you. It's okay love."

She sighed as he pulled her to him, trying to calm her, "okay. I love you Chris. I just want your family to love me too."

He brought his hand to her cheek, making her look up at him, "they already do. I promise. The only thing you should be worried about is them asking when I'm getting you pregnant."

She laughed, "we haven't even discussed that. I still feel like I'm in a honeymoon haze."

He nodded, laughing, "I know. Me too. You want kids though, right?"

She wrapped her arms around his midsection as she looked up at him, "do I want to have America's babies? You bet I do."

He smiled, pressing his lips to hers as they heard people arriving behind them.

Later, the sun had gone down and the kids were running around with sprinklers when Alexis heard a commotion inside the house.

"No. You can't talk to her!"

She went inside followed by Chris to see Robert and Scott trying to calm down an obviously drunk Joseph. She groaned as she put her arm up to hold back Chris, "what are you doing here Joey?"

Joseph stopped fighting against them, "I wanted to talk to you." He looked at everyone watching him, "alone."

"No way!" Chris shook his head, "she still has a giant bruise on her back from the last time you guys talked."

"What?!" Robert turned back to Alexis, "he hurt you?"

She felt her face redden with embarrassment, "it was an accident." She felt Chris try to lunge after him but Scott stood in front of him, "Chris. You can't. What would happen when the press finds out Captain America punched someone at his Fourth of July party?"

He groaned, "I don't care. He hurt you Alexis!"

Robert laughed, "I'm not Captain America."

Before Alexis understood what he meant, she watched his fist make contact with Joseph's face.

"Robbie!"

She laughed, turning around to see Erin enter in time to see him hit Joseph. She looked back at him to see him shaking his hand. She went to the kitchen while Chris and Scott kicked Joseph out of the house. She came back with ice, placing it on Robert's hand, "you're the best brother ever." She kissed him on the cheek as she felt Chris put his arm around her waist.
