On Yelena's bedroom floor we sat across from one another, papers being scattered from a folder Yelena had pulled from her father's office. Or so she said.
"I eto," she leaned forward, her face inches from mine as she pointed with her ringed pinkie, at a specific line of the paper in my hands. "You see?" She asked me, her green eyes looking into mine momentarily as I nodded 'yes', "That's the day that happened," she stated, sitting back down in front of me. Her legs bent at her side while she leaned on her hands which were planted on the carpeted rug.
"So," I scrunched my brows, shaking my head lightly as I made sense of the jumbled thoughts in my head from all that Yelena had told me. We'd been in her room for nearly an hour, the party still going on on the floor below us but she was finally opening up to me, revealing to me what exactly was going on with Mr. Francis. More specifically, the questions which were avoided on the main floor earlier that night.
"So," I repeated, "Mr. Francis is—"
"An immigrant," Yelena nodded.
"And your father is his employer?"
"Da," she nodded once more, "Milyy, this country makes it so difficult to have a decent life...unless you're born here or rich enough to buy it. My father," she paused, her eyes moving to the carpet as a slight and proud smile came to her lips, "He gave him that. A chance at least."
"Wait but what if Mr. Francis gets found? Won't he get sent back?" I asked, setting down the papers noting of Mr. Francis's birth of origin, his general background information, as well as the logs of Mr. Alexei's process in bringing him over the border.
Nodding and releasing a breath, Yelena looked up to me from the carpet she was focusing on before. "Yes, but that's a risk he was willing to take."
"And your father? What will happen to him?" I sat up right, immediately my mind flooding with the possibilities that his future could be if he did get caught for the crime. "He could get arrested," I said aloud, "And you're all involved, you could end up the same... Lena, could they take you away too? To prison? You can't go to prison Yelena, none of you! You're all just doing Mr. Francis a favor!"
Through her nose, Yelena released a short laugh, her smile from before widening a bit and seeming both warm and kind as her eyes softened. She leaned forward, taking my hands, softly rubbing her thumbs over the backs of my hands, "That's a risk we're all willing to take, dorogoyy," she spoke quietly. Her tone being soothing in the room though I was internally entering a sort of chaos.
Mentally, I running my mind through the endless conditions of the prison they could be taken to simply for helping a man work for a new life. A better life in comparison to the one of refuge and violence he lived before.
Not only could Alexei be ruined for his helping Mr. Francis, but his entire family as well. I couldn't bear the idea of them all suddenly being gone either for a long time or the rest of their lives. And I couldn't imagine the rumors that would spread even if word got to the press of their actual immigrating of Mr. Francis to the country. Even if the truth was spoken by Mr. Alexei himself, people would still find a way to poison his name with all kinds of other accusations and lies.
