Our Grey World

Chapter 5

Year 2085, Age 18

  The twins kept wailing trying to wake their parents up from an endless sleep.

           I held their hands and run to the base. We somehow get into the base and it's packed with people. There was barely any space left for more people. We claim our spots and I tell them to not move.

 Suddenly I hear loud screams. 

 "That's my spot!!" a faded voice comes.

 "Get out of here.... I'll kill you..." A loud gunshot and a scream could be heard, then suddenly pin drop silence. 

"What is your name?" I ask both of them softly, trying to divert their mind.

 "I'm Alessia and this is my brother Zack" one of them replies sniffling.

 "You have beautiful names.. But I'm going to ask you two to stay quiet and slowly follow me, okay? I'm going to take you somewhere you will be safe"

 They nod. 

            I tried to take them in the middle of the base so we all could be safe. I keep my backpack with me and slowly move to the middle and give Alessia and Zack some water to drink. They gulp it down and return the bottle to me. 

 "Thank you," Alessia says. 

"Thank you" Zach repeats.

 "Of course, now, listen...." I say "I know a place where there are spaceships that we can use. I don't have enough money to buy one but we can go to Nedroj on an abandoned spaceship."

 "And where will we find an abandoned spaceship?" Zach asked, his curious eyes gleaming with curiosity and sadness. 

 "Don't worry about that" I reply, trying to console them. 

"Okay...." 

 "We have to just wait here for 2 hours, I think, things might clear down a bit and we'll be able to sneak away." I look at my phone to check the time. "It's 2:47 p.m. now. We will leave for that place at 4:47" They nod.

                We wait for a long time during which they fall asleep. These two are too young. They shouldn't have had to face so much. I wonder if they'll ever get their innocence back...

                When finally, the time comes, I wake them up and tell them to follow me. I look around the room at all the dead people. I check their pockets and look for their cards. To run a spaceship we need a card. A special space ship card. I check their dates and gather all the cards. I'd somehow managed to get 6. I knew for a fact that they were enough to transport half the people in the room to Nedroj but for now I keep them to myself. I look at each one of them and see their validity and location and choose one with the closest location. 

                                 It had "Space Exit No. 53" written on it. I quickly searched the location on my phone and we left for the place. It wasn't far away but rather closer than we expected. 

         Before leaving we gave the rest of the cards to all the people who were still alive.

              ''Where are we going?'' Alessia asked.

 ''Just follow me, we'll soon be safe," I say to them while trying to smile

. We all went to the place and searched for the spaceship, luckily it was just at the front. I swiped the card and went in. '

'We are taking off!'' I say 

''You know how to make this thing work?'' Alessia asked.

 " My sister was into technology, she taught me before leaving. She'd sprout facts all the time'' I say while remembering those bittersweet memories. 

''That's so cool!''

 ''Three! Two! One! Take off!!'' I said.

                  The space ship was version 8. 14 which wasn't the best but had mostly everything we needed. Thankfully, it also had fresh food by which I mean fruits and vegetables. There was even canned food specially made for space.

          We munched on what we could, after all, we had a ten day journey on our hands.
