The door opened before I could respond and some random guy ran out and puked over the rail."Who the hell are you" Dad asked. The kid turned to look at us and then puked again.
"He's my assistant, daddy." I looked up as Beth walked out and handed the guy a class after putting Alka seltzer in it "Drink this and go walk it off." He started to walk and I laughed. "Walk it off is a metaphor, Jason. Go inside, take a shower"
"Wow, way to pick em." Beth looked at me as she leaned on the stones of the entrance to the porch.
"He'll be fine, hangovers build character. Need your help?"
"With what, I don't do banking."
"I know just some things he usually does but I'm having him look into things."
"Beth, my job is this ranch, I leave the city bullshit for you."
"One day."
"Fine." I sighed. "One day but it isn't a long-term deal."
"I know."
"Need a new attorney for the ranch." Dad said quietly. I sighed looking at him.
"I gotta study and take the bar but I'll do it if I got to, took pre-law in college."
"Thought you did vet shit."
"I did Farm and Ranch Management, equestrian studies, agricultural business and a minor in law smartass. Did 3 days on campus and rest online so I could be here, aced the fuckers too."
"Shit that's a lot of degrees, how come I didn't know this?"
"None of you do."
"Thought you only did farm and ranch and equestrian." Dad said.
"Did extra because I knew we could use it, told you this is where my heart was and I meant it." Dad smiled at me. I had ridden a horse before I could walk and all I ever loved was this place, the land, and the animals.
"Anyway, what did Jamie do?" Beth asked.
"Be a little bitch."
"Alexis."
"Not worng." I said as dad shook his head. Beth chuckled because she knew I was right. I didn't like Jamie but he, she fucking hated him since she was 16.
"Chose himself."
"Shouldn't surprise you. What are you going to do about it?"
"I'm gonna take away the thing he left us for." Dad walked off and in as Beth smiled looking out over the property.
"Daddy's probably gonna cut his ass off, as he shoulda a long ass time ago."
"Well, you know daddy's gonna always hold out hope."
"I know."
"Truthfully between us the only one that ever had a chance with this place or knew what to do was you and Lee and you're all that's left."
"Work with me and we won't lose it." I headed out to the barn and climbed the fence watching as Rip and another hand roped a cow.
"Walker, Jimmy get your asses in there." Rip said as they traded out. Once they were done I walked to the barn with Rip and saw dad cleaning a stall.
"Go talk to him, I'll clean him for you." I could barely hear them and heard Rip ask dad a question that had me pause what I was doing
"How much time you got left?"
