Heading back to the house Beth was on the porch. "Still need help?"

"Sure, been buying land around the property line to keep the ranch safe, wanna help?"

"Sure, I'll come to the office with you tomorrow."

"What about here?"

"Need a break."

The next night we were in her office and she was smoking a cigarette.

"God how do you do this shit every day." I said looking over shit. I could definitely leave this to her, this wasn't me.

"Hello" We looked up me turning as we heard a voice and Jamie walked around the corner.

"Got some balls." I said turning back around.

"Can you two put aside how you feel for a second? Remember we're family"

"Love how people think that word entitles them to absolution from the people whose lives they ruin. We owe you nothing."

"Goddamn it, can you please attempt to resemble something human, listen to me, and give me some fucking guidance"

"How'd you fuck up this time?" I asked glancing back at him.

"What she said." Beth retorted

"I didn't fuck anything I ran for the office he told me to run for and you chose someone to run against me."

"Chose well didn't I? Maybe when she's in office she'll ask you to clerk. No one researches like you Jamie."

"I have a donor willing to fund my campaign."

"Let me guess Russians want you to do a facebook blast." He grabbed the paper on her desk.

"This is my donor."

"Rainwater and Jenkins, you out of your goddamn mind!" I yelled turning around. "Do you know they're goddamn plan, they want to build drive up the property taxes to where they are too expensive and hen take that land from people." I got up walking out because I was pissed. I couldn't do this Getting home dad was sitting on the couch.

"Was wondering if you were coming back?"

"Was helping Beth, dad Jamie has someone willing to fund his campaign, it's fucking Thomas Rainwater and Dan Jenkins."

"Thank you for telling me honey, go rest." The next night Jamie came for dinner and said he withdrew from the race. I walked outside not wanting to eat what Beth had got Gator to make. I wasn't eating octopus. Sitting on the porch I watched as Rip walked through the sprinklers, a wrench in his hand, it had been a couple of days now since I had spoken to him when we sat in damn near the same area. I looked up as dad walked out, seeing I was looking at him but I moved my eyes sight and looked elsewhere, making it look like I was just overlooking everything; but I knew dad knew better. I honestly unlike myself spent the next few days in the house not doing anything, I think it bothered me a bit more that I got no message, call, visit or anything from Rip. I looked at my phone seeing Kayce calling.

"What."

"I need you."

"What's wrong?"

"The cows are dead, get to 33 as fast as you can" I tossed on boots and grabbed my baseball hat and jacket going to get Knight I saddled him fast and rode out. Kayce was with Jimmy and Rip. I saw him glance at me but ignored it

"You tell dad?"

"Called Jamie, they are in a meeting, he's on the way."

"What happened?"
