The next day I was walking through the stalls with John and we passed the kid as he was cleaning out the stalls, Lex and Beth both were pissed off so he had really fucked up. Pissing off one Dutton woman was enough but both. As we walked by I looked at him."You saddle those horses?"
"They're tied outside."
"You and I are talking later."
"Am I in trouble?" He asked stepping out. I didn't respond but John glanced at him and then to me.
"Is he in trouble?"
"He pissed your daughter off pretty good." John stopped looking at the kid. "Both of them."
"Then he's in trouble." That night walking in the stalls the kid was putting up a horse.
"What a fucking mess you've made of your last second chance. Life is a long lesson, boy. One long lesson, but you gotta look to learn them and you ain't fucking looking." I said walking up to him. Before I could continue I heard glass breaking and yelling making me turn my head towards the bunkhouse. I glanced at the kid walking off. Walking in I slammed the door seeing the crew holding Lloyd and Walker, Teeter holding Laramie. Lloyd looked at me. "What's the rule about fighting Lloyd? Hmm?" I shoved past Walker standing in front of Lloyd. "Goddamn you for making me do this." I said swinging and punching him. I then tossed him across the table before walking up to Walker and grabbing him. "There's no fighting on this ranch. You want to fight somebody you come fight me." I said with a finger in his face. "I'll fight you all fucking day." I then walked around a second before leaving slamming the door behind me.
Walking back to the barn I ran my hands over my face. Lloyd had been here since before I had been, taught me everything and was the person I was probably closest to out of the hands, hell I had asked the fucking man to be my best man. I walked to the door where I had stayed for so long when I first got here and opened it as the kid looked at me. "You have no future, none. Beyond this place. And if you don't find a way to get her trust back, you're not gonna have this either. Then your life is like your father's life and you know how that ended. There's two roads in life, One is you're winning or learning. The other is that you're losing all the way to the fucking grave." I said chuckling looking at him. "Boy, you'd better choose quickly or life's gonna choose it for you." I said shutting the door as I left going back to the house." Lex was asleep when I got there so I got ready for bed and laid next to her, pressing a kiss to her head. I woke up the nex morning as Lex kissed my cheek and neck gently as she moved on top of me, I glanced over at the clock seeing it was 3:41.
"Morning" She said gently as I rubbed her back as I chuckled.
"Not yet it ain't." I responded tiredly.
"We've established this pattern where you wake up at dawn to go to work, and then I wake up and want to fuck and then I have to convince you that the day can wait, well the day hasn't started yet so you're out of fucking excuses buddy." She said kissing my neck as I laughed "Get to work." She said kissing me.
"Mm." I said hugging her to me. "You are the perfect woman, you know that?"
"I'm aware." She said "When's your birthday?" She asked
"Hmm?"
"Your birthday, when is it, that's one thing I've never known about you."
"Sweetie, let's talk about this in 15 minutes." I said with my eyes closed. Loving the feeling of her in my arms.
"When is it?" She asked sitting up. I sighed
"I don't know Alexis."
"How do you mean you don't know. Look on your driver's license." I cracked my eyes open looking at her.
