"If your joining the family can you please be the one person in it who fuckin talks to me?"

"Your daughter talks to you."

"You know what I mean Rip."

"I love her, sir. I'll always take care of her."

"That's why I said yes." I nodded,

"You know why uh people don't come and talk to you? Cause they're scared they're going to let you down. I know I am."

"If you're marrying my daughter you've already proved you're not scared of anything." we both chuckled.

"Yeah, but in honesty I am, scared of losing her. Hell, I was supposed to ask her, course she did her own thing like always and asked me."

"Than ask, didn't see why you didn't you weren't putting me in a position. I know you love her I would have said yes to you like I did for her." I looked down nodding.

"Sir, I love your daughter, would it be ok if I married her." John smiled

"Yes Rip, you can have her hand. You wanna ask her take her out somewhere in one of the fields on the horses, and ask. Know that's what she pictured. You give her it."

"Yes sir." I walked off heading back to take the sorrel. Getting there I saw Lloyd and Jimmy in the stable. "Jimmy hook up the trailer and load up that sorrel will ya. When you are done come to the truck." I said to Lloyd

"For what?"

"Want some company."

"Thought you said you wanted some company."

"Mhmm."

"We been driving six hours and you aint said a fucking word."

"Lloyd, I'm trying to choose my words."

"Shit, shoulda been able to write a fucking song by now." I finally got to this free-roaming horse field and found a place and parked the truck. We got the horse out, he was pretty good but he'd be happier running out here. Not very often you found a horse that refused to be tamed, but I couldn't blame him.

"I'm getting married." I said as we walked. Lloyd looked over at me a light laugh leaving him.

"Yeah, I've been wondering what's up with you lately."

"I need a best man."

"Kayce's her brother. Fixin to be yours."

"Hmm."

"You should ask him."

"Probably so but I ain't. I'm asking you." I said looking over at him. He looked over nodding. I unhooked the horse letting him free and watched him run off. Alexis would love to see this, I saw her face when we rouned up those other horses, it made her happy. We got back to the truck and headed out. We stopped by a bar to have a drink.

"To your life with her. Cheers."

"Cheers." I said as he hit cans.

"You're smiling." Lloyd said he was getting a hell of a kick outta this.

"Shut up will ya?" I said looking ahead a smile plastered on my face. Feel like I keep doing that lately. I slid a pick in my mouth.

"You did something no one does, Rip." I looked over at him. "You've outlived your past."

"Maybe so Lloyd, maybe so."

"You deserve her, she's good for you Rip, and you're good for her."

"I hope so."
