Cowboy Poker

The next morning I got ready and rode with Dad, Kayce and everyone. We had bulls we needed to round up.

"Send the dogs." Dad said looking ahead of us. We didn't need to take the horses in the thicket but damn sure couldn't leave the bulls. Rip whistled and the dogs ran up. Travis made a joke with my dad as I chuckled.

"You've traded him enough Travis bout time we did it back."

"Smartass." He replied.

"That she is, but a smart one." I smiled at dad I heard one of the bulls and held my reins a little tighter knowing that when they came out it was game on.

"Split up!"

"Alexis you're with me!" I nodded letting dad know I heard him as we galloped off going to track down the bulls. This was 100,000 bucks on the line. We had to get them, we managed to pull it off and Lloyd commented it was reckless. We were hearding them in the pen when they got the gate open.

"Shit. Keep them away from the cows!" I yelled as we tried to make sure they didn't get close.

"Jimmy get ready to close that fucking gate." Rip ordered

"They're fucking angry." he said grabbing the gate

"No shit they're fucking angry." Rip yelled. "They're job is to fuck, Jimmy. And they ain't fucked in 6 months."

"Better grow eyes in the back of your head kid." I replied turning my horse. I saw the vet drive up and looked over at dad. "Vet is here."

"Looking for some day work, trying to get to Arizona." Dad and I turned as this older man walked up. Dad looked out into the pen.

"You can make your case to that guy right there." The guy nodded tipping his hat before climbing the fence and making his way to Kayce.

"Shouldn't he talk to Rip?"

"Kayce's gotta learn how to run this Alexis."

"Rip is the foreman."

"I'm going to ask him to step back and let Kayce do it, only way he's gonna learn and he can't do it in the bunkhouse."

"Dad he ain't ready."

"We have to get him ready Alexis. You can't do this alone, whether you want to admit it or not it's gonna take the both of you. I'm gonna need you to follow him."

"What?"

"Rip will fall in line if you do."

"Have you met him, it's gonna take more than me to make him fall in line, shit he'll listen to you more than me and the rest of these guys are not gonna listen to him."

"They will if you and Rip can."

"Goddammit." I replied stepping away. I ended up eating supper with the guys and Avery It was nice having another girl who loved this around

"Gonna come hang out, it's Saturday"

"Fuck it, yeah." Walking in she gave me the bottle of bourbon as the guys started playing poker.

"I don't know how to play this"

"Just watch." She said laughing.

"So you and Rip, ya'll together?" Everyone stopped as Jimmy spoke.

"Fucking dumbass" Lloyd said.

"When you become not a dumbass maybe I will answer that"

"Only two I seen with any balls beside me are these two young ladies" I looked at the new man Cowboy with a smirk. "When I was your age we were out in the arena playing real poker. Cowboy poker."
