"Ok, everyone," Madame Gazelle honked. "We are going to do an activity together. I will assign partners."
Madame Gazelle went over to the chalkboard and started to write out partners. Danny and Wendy were together, Emily and Candy were together, Gerald and Molly were together, Rebecca and Peppa were together, Mandy and Zoe were together, and...
Suzy gasped. She and Freddy were partners! She snuck a glance at him, and he seemed... angry? disappointed? Annoyed?
Suzy frowned. Didn't he like her?
Madame Gazelle waved her hands around trying to get everyone's attention. "The activity that we will be doing is a scavenger hunt!" She said excitedly, clapping her hands together and smiling.
As she handed out the lists, Suzy walked shyly over to Freddy. "uh, hi." She murmured quietly, not sure if he would hear her.
Freddy nodded briskly at her, and grabbed one of the sheets from Madame Gazelle, examining it closely.
"Oh, and the first pair to finish the hunt will get a prize! A toffee apple each!" Madame Gazelle announced.
Everyone ran outside to start in hopes that they would win with renewed excitement.
Suzy looked at Freddy expectantly. She had done this before at her old school, so she knew what to do.
"Can I see the list?" She said.
Freddy handed it over, avoiding fur contact. Freddy leant away as fast as he could covering his nose.
Suzy sniffed her fur. She didn't smell that bad, did she?
The items on the list included a pinecone, a feather, a red leaf, a smooth stone, something black, and a stick that had three points. Easy.
"We should find a feather first." Suzy decided. Freddy frowned, and nodded.
"I can find one," he said softly. Without waiting for an answer, he went off. He held his head high, confidently going one way, before stopping, and altering the direction.
Suzy huffed. "And where exactly are we going? I don't understand how you could possibly just know the way to a feather."
Freddy shook his head, concentrating, before stopping under a tree, and picking up a feather. Suzy gaped, before looking around and finding a pinecone.
Freddy glanced at Suzy. "Two down, four to go. Want to get the red leaf next?"
"Where would we find a red leaf?" Suzy wondered aloud. "Are there any trees with red leaves around here?"
Freddy nodded, before walking away, throwing a look over his shoulder to indicate that Suzy should follow.
He led her around to the other side of the hill the playgroup building sat upon. There was a tree with dark red leaves.
Suzy reached forward to pick up a red leaf. She smiled at Freddy. "Another one down! How about we find the stick next? There are heaps of trees, we're bound to find one."
Freddy nodded. "I'll climb a tree and look up there. You can look down here." Without waiting for an answer, he climbed nimbly up a nearby tree.
Suzy frowned. He was very agile and strong. Perhaps he climbed trees a lot? She bent down, beginning to look for a stick.
After a couple of very boring minutes, in which Suzy had found no stick and sat down, Freddy jumped down from the tree with a three pointed stick in his hands.
"That's four down." he said.
"We can look for something black now." Suzy said, before having a brilliant idea. "The dirt! It's pretty dark, and can be described as black."
Without waiting for an answer, she bent down and scooped up a handful of dirt, before proudly showing it to Freddy.
"That's just the stone left. You're gonna carry the dirt." Said Freddy, wrinkling his nose and leaning away from Suzy.
Suzy huffed and looked around, trying to find a smooth stone. Freddy drifted away from her, probably in search of a stone.
Yet Suzy frowned. He didn't seem to like her very much.
"Ahah!" Suzy held out the stone in her hands. It was very smooth. "That's the last thing. We can show Madame Gazelle now."
She gave Freddy the stone, and he reluctantly reached out for it, before quickly withdrawing his hand.
Freddy and Suzy walked in silence to the top of the hill where Madame Gazelle was waiting.
"Well done!" Madame Gazelle said when she saw all of their items. "You two are the first to finish! Here are your toffee apples."
Suzy took her apple and munched at it, thinking about Freddy. He just kept on getting more and more mysterious.
