They were all down on a field, the markers for the game set up. Suzy was standing off to the side with Mrs Fox.
"So, I can't play?" Suzy asked.
"Oh, no," Mrs Fox shook her head. "Far too dangerous for you. Besides, I need someone to help ref. They're all like to cheat."
Cue the protests from out on the field. No human should have been able to hear that far, but Suzy reminded herself that they were vampires. And Freddy could hear thoughts. Not hers though, apparently.
"So, Freddy can hear thoughts. What can everyone else do?" Suzy asked Mrs Fox.
"Oh, not all of us can do anything. Emily can see the future sometimes, and Gerald can feel and influence emotions."
Suzy nodded.
Then the game began.
Suzy understood why they had to play during a thunderstorm. Everytime two of them collided, they made a sound as loud as thunder.
It was all fun and games helping ref the vampire's game of baseball. Freddy was super fast, and was great at running after the ball and scoring points as he ran around the diamond.
Then Emily got a vision. She stopped suddenly and gasped.
"There's a bunch of vampires heading our way! They're blood drinkers," she added, glancing nervously at Suzy.
They all turned to Suzy.
"Is there time for Freddy to get her out?" Mr Elephant asked, worriedly.
Emily shook her head.
"I can smell them!" candy cat exclaimed.
That sent everyone into haywire. All the vampires clumped around Suzy, trying to mask her scent.
"Angle your head down," Freddy instructed. "And try and hold your breath."
"It's no use," Candy snapped. "I can smell her from the other side of the field."
"Then we'll just have to hope the wind stays blowing away from us," said Mr Elephant gravely.
Just then, three vampires with bright, blood red eyes burst out of the trees on the other side of the field heading straight towards them. There was a tiger with bright red hair, a hyena with brown hair, and a snow white buffalo.
"Heard you were playing baseball," one of them said. Good, they hadn't smelled Suzy yet. "Can we join?"
"Actually, we were just heading home," Mrs Fox explained kindly.
"Oh, what a pity. I guess we'll just hunt then," the tiger said, baring her teeth in anticipation, leading her comrades away.
"You can't hunt humans on our land," Mr Elephant called out. "We don't want you getting us found out."
The vampires started to nod, but then Suzy felt something terrible.
The wind was starting to shift.
The buffalo sniffed the air. "You brought snacks? She smells good." He was staring straight at Suzy, and she curled into herself. This was not good.
"You can't have her," Freddy exclaimed defensively, shifting in front of her.
The buffalo and the tiger lunged forwards, fangs bared, as the cullens surged forwards to protect Suzy. The hyena shifted around uncomfortably.
Freddy seized, and chucked her in the back of the car and jumped into the driver's seat. He started to drive like mad. Suzy was suddenly struck with confusion; he could drive! and she hadn't even noticed! It would be because he was a hundred years old, he thought.
He kept cursing, and glanced at Suzy. "This is bad. That buffalo, his name is Jeff, and he's a hunter. He doesn't stop until he gets his prey, or until someone kills him."
Suzy's eyes widened. She had gotten herself into deep trouble, much deeper than she originally thought.
