James stalked closer to Suzy, with his supernatural grace. He grinned wickedly in her direction.
"Isn't it a nice surprise? Your father was never really in any danger."
It was. Relief flooded over Suzy; her father was safe!
"Yes, I suppose it is." Suzy sighed in relief.
He regarded her with curiosity. "You don't seem angry or scared."
For some reason, she really wasn't. Maybe she was still sleep deprived, or maybe she was high on adrenaline. Whatever it was, it was making her brave.
"I'm not."
"Strange." His keen eyes devoured Suzy, scanning her with interest. His eyes glowed a dark red, nearly black. Suzy may have not been the smartest in the class, but she knew what that meant. He was hungry.
"You humans are interesting," James drawled. "I suppose that's why your coven is so... drawn to you." He stepped even closer, baring his fangs.
He was a mere meter away from Suzy now. Suzy felt braver now, under his stare. It held no menace, only curiosity, if a bit of hunger.
He just looked so normal. His figure was pretty average, and he was wearing plain jeans and a polo shirt.
"This has just been so easy," he continued, cocking his head. "I'll admit, I thought you would have presented a harder challenge, something more... fun, if you know what I mean."
His grin grew wider at Suzy's silence.
"I had Victoria look into you, who you were. It was mere luck that she found the old video and your phone number. We're better than you would have thought at technology, seeing as we were born centuries before."
Suzy had almost forgotten about that. It was a pity that her bravery was now wearing off, and she felt quite scared.
"What was your boyfriend's name, Freddy, wasn't it?" James drew back, hand going into his pocket.
Suzy sensed he was nearly finished gloating, and she was right. James placed a camera on a stereo, directed at Suzy. The blinking light was on.
"I was so looking forward to a hunt, it was quite sad that you didn't give." He bared his fangs. "So I suppose when Freddy sees this, he'll give me the hunt I'm craving."
He prowled up to Suzy, trailing a hand on her cheek. Suzy had frozen in fear.
"I suppose we should started now." He grinned so wickedly that Suzy's knees started to shake in fear. His eyes danced with delight; he could probably smell her fear.
He stepped back, circling around her, before dropping into a crouch. He bared his sharp teeth, glistening in the low lights.
Adrenaline unfroze Suzy, and she couldn't help but make a mad sprint to the door. It was useless; the jackal was in front of her within seconds, a blow striking her chest and throwing her backward into a mirror, the glass shattering around her.
James was upon her again, stepping on her leg. It snapped, and Suzy howled in agony.
"Any last words?" He snarled.
Suzy shook her head, frantically gasping for breath. Something smashed into her head, throwing her backwards once again. Suzy felt the millions of shards of glass dig into her scalp.
Blood trickled down, and James was no longer playing. There was a mad thirst in his eyes.
The blood was flowing too fast, and she was in too much pain.
Her blood pooled around her, and darkness stole her.
-
As Suzy drifted in unconsciousness, sounds floated around her, muted as if she were underwater. Snarls tore at her ears, a sudden sharp pain blooming in her arm. Yet despite the fresh pain tugging her back to consciousness, she drifted still.
It was then that she knew that she was dead.
"Suzy! Suzy!"
A soft, cool voice tugged at her. Was it an angel to bring her to heaven? Or, since Suzy was an atheist, a pure figment of her imagination?
"Suzy! Oh no, Suzy, please.. please... Suzy! Please!" The voice begged her, agony in it's voice.
Another voice joined harmoniously with the first.
"She's lost a lot of blood, she's delirious. Fortunately, the head wound isn't too deep. Her leg is broken, so- don't step on it!" there was a sudden pain in her side. "Some broken ribs, too."
The pain was almost unbearable, but it started to fade, taken over by a terrible burning sensation. Like she was in the heart of a fire.
"Freddy?" She whispered, words dry on her lips.
"I'm here, Suzy, you're gonna be fine. Fine. Can you hear me?"
"It hurts," Suzy whimpered. Her hand was on fire.
"I can help," Mr Elephant said, before saying to someone else "Hold your breath, Molly."
"It was lucky Molly knew where to find you," Freddy said.
"My hand," Suzy tried to tell him.
"Yeah, we know. It'll stop."
"IT'S BURNING!" Suzy cried, pain woven into her voice. Her eyes flickered open, barely able to see anything through the blood flowing into her eyes.
"Suzy?" Freddy asked, tentatively.
"The fire!" She cried.
"Dad! He bit her!" Horror and panic in his voice now.
"You have to do it, Freddy," Molly whispered.
"NO!" He groaned.
"There's a chance, Freddy!" Mr Elephant spoke. "You have to suck the venom out!"
"I... I don't know if I can do that." Freddy's voice was hesitant and scared.
"I can't do it, Freddy. I have to stop the bleeding in her head."
"Freddy!" Suzy cried again.
"Molly! Brace her leg," Mr Elephant commanded. "Freddy."
Suzy broke through the haze, able to see Freddy's face. It was lit up with a sudden determination.
He held Suzy's hand in his, pressing his mouth to it.
First, the pain was blindingly worse. Suzy thrashed and screamed in pain.
Slowly, her hand grew more and more numb. Cooling down. Relief flooded her.
"Freddy," Suzy murmured. "Stay.."
"Is it all out?" Mr Elephant asked.
"Yeah," Freddy responded. "Is the fire gone, Suzy?"
"Mhmm. Freddy, stay..."
"I will. Sleep now, Suzy."
Darkness claimed her once more, but it was a warm, kind sort of darkness.
