by the fire rests a fighter, love is all he knows

and that's just how the story goes

and they vanquish the villain, day after day

he fights, he fails, takes flight, knows they'll "always find a way"

it's a constant, this give and take

this ebb and flow they share

they're the heroes, he's the anti-

it's okay, he doesn't care

then suddenly the fighter is reaching out a hand

but not to hit him or to hurt him and he doesn't understand

and the fairy tale is breaking

and he's tired and he's aching

and he's making more mistakes, the earth is shaking

and he's staking all his hope

on this fragile kind of notion

on this crazy new emotion

he's not always the bad guy

the story doesn't need a bad guy to go on

youth seemed sweeter

but if I could return all that I learned

all I learned would be forfeit

I won't go back
