Luke POV
Ray hands me my bag. "Come on, I'll set up a mattress in Reggie's room." I nod as I follow him upstairs. I walk into the room and see a mattress already on the floor. "JULIE! COME MOVE YOUR MATTRESS BACK INTO YOUR ROOM."
"Julie's mattress is in Reggie's room?"
"Yeah, She spent the night in there last night." We both pause for a minute when we hear footsteps coming up the stairs. Julie hides her face trying to hide the fact she's been crying. She draggs her mattress back into her room and runs back downstairs. "I'll be in the garage if you need me." She says running out the back door. "She's been really attached to Reggie lately. She wanted to sleep on his floor before the court case this morning. I think she's afraid he's going to have to leave again."
"Leave again?"
"Yeah, the last time we tried to adopt Reggie things fell through at the last minute and he went back to his biological parents for a while. It was really hard on Julie."
"That would explain the attachment for both of them," I mumble under my breath. "What was that?" Ray said, "Oh, nothing." Ray smiles at me as he lays out the air mattress on the floor. "This should get you through the next few nights. If this ends up being more permanent we can deal with that then."
"More permanent?"
"Yeah, but don't worry about that. We can cross that bridge if it happens, but I don't think it will." I nod my head and start to look through the bag that my mom packed for me. I see a handwritten note on top of all of my things. It saysDear Luke,
I'm sorry this is the way you have to find out, but I couldn't think to tell you in person. Your Father and I need to leave town for a few days to take care of some unfinished business. We hope to be back before your seventeenth birthday, if we don't I put a card for you at the bottom of the bag in the yellow envelope. Do not open the envelope unless we are not back by your birthday. We hope to see you real soon. Always remember we Love you and any decision we make we kept you and what we feel best for you in mind.
Love, MomI look up from the note very confused. I realize that there is enough stuff to last about two weeks and my birthday is still three weeks away. I lay the note down and start to unpack what I need. I hear footsteps and see Reggie walk into his room. "Hey, what are you still doing here? With a bag."
"Yeah, I guess we're going to be roommates for a little bit."
"Not that I don't love this idea, but do you know why?"
"No, no idea. My mom came and instead of picking me up she dropped off this bag." I look down slightly depressed about all the uncertainty. "Hey, we always wanted to be roommates right? You and Alex got to be roommates, now we get our turn." He says with a laugh. I smile back. "Come here," Reggie says, patting the spot on the bed next to him. I glare at him for a minute, but he gives me a look back acknowledging that I don't have a choice. I climb up on the bed next to him. He opens his arms and I reluctantly give him a hug. That's all it took for me to break down into his arms. "I got you." He whispers in my ear as he holds me tight. Reggie has been there through everything, and something tells me that he's going to be there through a lot more.
