Part 22

Luke POV

I watch everyone walk out the door and see Ray on the other side of the counter. "The courthouse opens at 8 so we can go drop off some paperwork, then how about we go get you an actual bed and some other stuff because you're going to be staying here for a while." He says with a smile. "Okay," I say still very anxious about the whole situation. "Luke, are you sure this is what you want. I'm not going to kick you out if you don't want this."
"No. This is what I want, it's just... It's..." I let out a sigh. "Are you sure you want me?"
"Yes, I'm sure. Luke, we've been talking about this since you were a little kid. I always knew this was a possibility and Emily told me it was going to be a possibility when she dropped your stuff off. I wouldn't have given you the option if I wasn't already sure." I nod my head and he gives me a hug. You know Reggie was right, Ray does give the best hugs. "Okay, I'm going to call the lawyer and figure out what needs to happen next, then we will figure out where to go from there, sound good?"
"Sounds good. Hey Da... Ray is it okay if I go to the garage?"
"Yeah, of course, I'll come get you when it's time to go." I nod my head and walk out to the garage. I sit there and start playing 'Unsaid Emily' on the piano, I didn't feel like singing the words, just playing the melody. I play it slowly and begin to smile, I hear the door open"Alright Luke, let's go to the lawyer's office." Ray said holding the Yellow envelope. I nod my head and walk to the door. "What were you playing?"
"Oh, it's nothing, just a melody I'm playing with."
"Hey, maybe you  three can sit down and write some lyrics to it sometime." He says with a smile. "Yeah, maybe," I say with a smile and slight laugh. Most of the car ride is pretty silent we pull up outside of the lawyers' office. We walk over and Ray hands a lady the envelope will all the papers inside. "Okay, Mr. Molina My computer tells me that you are filing for guardianship of Luke Petterson?"
"Yes, I am."
We stay there for a while longer and Ray signs a lot of paperwork and the Lady makes a lot of phone calls and puts a lot of things into the computer. "Alright! It looks like it's all set! For now, We will give you a phone call if anything else comes up!" She says with a smile. "Thank you, Luke, you ready to go?" My dad says looking at me. I nod back. He smiles as we turn around before wrapping his arm over my shoulder and leading me out the door. We get in the car once again. "What if next we went to the store and got you a bed so you don't have to sleep on that air mattress anymore?" I nod my head. "Luke, I know this is hard. I want you to know that you can tell me anything okay?"
"I know," I say staring out the window watching the trees pass by. "Okay," Ray says with a sigh. We shop for several more hours and pick up our lunch on the way back home. "Luke do you want to go to school today? Or would you rather stay home?"
"As much as I want to stay home, I think I need to go. I want to see some of my friends."
"Okay, well, eat up then I'll take you to school." I nod my head and quickly eat my burger.
We both finish eating lunch Ray drives me to school. "I texted Reggie, He's going to give you a ride home." I nod my head. "I love you Luke, have a good day."
"you too Ray," I say sliding out of the car and running into the school. I walk into the office and sign myself in for the day. I hear the bell ring. At least I made it here during a passing period. I walk to my class and pass Reggie and Alex in the hall. I grab Reggies arm "Hey Luke, you did decide to come to school today."
"Yeah, Ray just dropped me off. You got his text, right? About taking me home."
"I haven't looked at my phone, but now that I know you're here I won't leave without you." He says with a smile. "Hey Luke, you okay? Seem a little bit off."
'Yeah, I'll be fine."
"Okay, Well... Happy Birthday, Luke."
"Thank you," I say as I nod my head and walk off to my next class.
