Messing With My Head

You don't get much time to sleep next to Azul. It was only a nap, after all, and it only lasted an hour. Your body wasn't in a position to sleep for long. Azul must have been in the same state, because he wakes up the moment you shift away from him in bed.
"Sleep well?" He asks. You stretch your arms behind your head.
"Oh my god, I think my back pain is cured," you suddenly find yourself resisting the urge to make some kind of sexual or romantic joke at him. You were going to tell him to marry you so you could use this bed every night, but instead you think back to your thoughts from before the nap. Azul might really like you and you might like him. It's always been so easy until now. Guys were up front when they had feelings for you and you would decide whether they were worth dating after they confessed. You don't like when things are complicated like this.
"I can have a better mattress sent to your apartment," Azul casually offers.
"No way, that's way too generous. I don't wanna be indebted to you like that."
"Consider it a freebie!" He smiles brightly at you. You narrow your eyes at him.
"A freebie? Did I wake up in a different dimension? One with a different Azul? Or are you sick? Should I be worried?" Azul let's out a carefree laugh.
"I just want to help you out! You're the same princess of paranoia as always," it was the second time he called you that. If anyone else came up with it, you would probably push them into traffic. But coming from him, it feels comfortable, charming even. If he was a random guy, you would be making a move this moment, hoping for a night of fun. But you can't very well try for a one night stand with your boss for various reasons. Truly the weirdest position you've ever been in.
"I'll have to pass for now. Maybe I can accept it as a birthday present somewhere down the line. You know when my birthday is."
"Naturally," you throw a pillow at Azul.
"Almost forgot how much of a creep you are," you joke, getting off the bed.
"Ah, I thought we were past that, Y/n!" Azul says in a smarmy voice. You subconsciously note how similar conversations to this one went when you first met. Back when you genuinely thought he was a creep and he would put on a fake charm. It felt so natural now.
"Azul," you say softly. You're not sure if you should say what you're about to say.
"Yes?" He sits up in bed, apprehension in his voice due to your sudden change in demeanor.
"I don't regret taking this job," you tell him, no sarcasm in your voice, no mischievous glimmer in your eyes. Just a sincere statement. Azul can't help the sweet smile that forms on his face.
"I'm glad you came around on it. Even if we had to put in some work to convince you," you smile back at him.
"Hope it was worth it."
"It was," his smile goes wider. It leaves a bittersweet feeling in your heart. You have a good friend here, and that makes you happy, but you realize that, should you want to, you can't progress this past friendship. You both worked too hard for things to be the way they are. It wouldn't be fair to either of you. You quickly change the subject.
"Ya know, you still owe me a look in that safe of yours," you remind him. He sighs and gets off the bed.
"I was hoping you forgot about that. But, a promise is a promise," Azul leads you out of his room and back to your place of work.

Your first immediate thought when Azul starts opening his safe is that it's full of bodies and you're either about to become one or he's going to ask you to help him acquire more. Since he seems fond of you, you assume it's the latter. Then you realize that he probably doesn't have bodies in there and that's just your distrust of everyone coming out. Then the paranoia comes back and you expect to see a torture chamber. Of course, none of that is actually there.
"Is it everything you imagined?" Azul gestures to the inside of the open safe. Much of the contents were treasures beyond your wildest dreams. A handful of the loot could pay off your rent for a year. But that was what you could expect from a closely guarded safe. What really stood out was the small stack of papers sitting neatly on a side table in the corner.
"What're these for?" You approach the side table, tentatively picking up the stack. It looks to be a bunch of contracts.
"Just some important documentation. You should've seen how much paperwork I used to have in here. I... got rid of a lot a few months before you started working here," that would explain why that one corner of the safe was a little emptier than the rest.
"They look like contracts. You got a record label I don't know about?" You joke.
"Maybe~ I could sign you if you like," he jokes back.
"Let's do it. I got a voice that'll knock you on your ass!" You pause for a second. "Actually, there's no way I'm signing a contract you wrote up."
"It's just as well, I don't actually have a record label. But now that I know you can sing..." your face drops and you shoot Azul a murderous glare. You don't like where this is going.
"Don't you dare say it," you demand.
"We could always use some entertainment in the Lounge!" He said it.
"NOT HAPPENING!" You toss the stack of papers back at Azul, who clumsily catches them. You're about to stomp out of the safe in irritation when something else catches your eye; an small onyx pendant on a thin gold chain. You cautiously pick it up from a shelf on the wall and quietly look at it for an uncomfortable minute. Azul takes notice of your change in mood.
"Are you alright?" He moves to stand next to you.
"Hm? Yeah. This just... reminds me of a present I got once. Only way more expensive," you start to place it back on the shelf, but Azul stills your hand.
"It's yours if you want it," he offers. You stare him in the eyes. Normally you would turn down an offer like that immediately. You're always cautious of generosity. But it really struck a chord with you. It really did look just like the last birthday present your sisters got you before your parents kicked you out. Not that Azul had to know that. Your body moves on its own, giving Azul a light kiss on the cheek, making him burn up.
"Thank you," you put on the necklace.
"I-I-it looks good on you," Azul quietly tells you. You smile at him, swearing in your head that you'll find a way to pay him back without spending money.
"Thanks. So, uh, I should be heading home. Gotta get ready for work tomorrow," Azul's face drops the slightest bit knowing that you're leaving. You don't really want to, but it's the only way to keep you from throwing yourself at him.
"I'll escort you out," Azul walks you back to your designated room in the dorm so you can change back into your regular clothes and grab your stuff. You approach the mirror leading out of the dorm. "Get home safe, Y/n," Azul says. "I'll see you tomorrow."
"Yeah, see ya. Thanks again for the necklace."
"Don't worry about it. I have plenty more just like it," Azul tries to underplay his previous gesture. You give him a quick hug.
"I'll text you when I get home," you assure him. It's a courtesy you only offer your favorite people, letting them know you didn't get murdered on the way home. You walk through the mirror, leaving Azul behind. You'll be dedicating the walk home to sorting your feelings out, that's for sure.
