CHRIS'S POV
After what Bridget confessed, I was left flushed. Then it hit me.... the letter he wrote before his death. "Trust me when I say if I tell you what it is that I did, you would have dealt with me in the worst way possible."
"Makhosi is it true?" I ask in denial.
No, no, I refuse to believe it's true. My brother can't do that to me...atleast not intentionally. Makhosi's silence speaks for her and my world comes crushing down. Out of all the bad news I've ever heard, this is by far the worst.
"Your daughter wants to leave and I foresee three of your taxies burning." Makhosi says making me sober as a judge.
"Wha-what do you mean?" I ask unbelievably.
"The more she is angry, the more the ancestors are angry. They are not happy my boy, this ritual has to happen or you will be left with no cent."
I blink my eyes trying to fathom what she just said.
"I'm afraid to say even a life is at risk if we don't do the necessities so I will speak to them myself." She says getting up.
That gives me some sort of relief and I follow her as we head to their room. Makhosi knocks on the door and Lisa opens it quite aggressively. My eyes travel to Bridget who is sniffing with a tissue in her hand. Lisa's eyes and Makhosi's eyes lock not until she shifts her gaze towards me.
"Have you brought your grandmother as well to insult us?" She asks.
Before I can even respond Makhosi raises a hand indicating I should stay quiet.
"May we please come in? And I am not his grandmother." Makhosi says.
She hesitantly opens the door for us and there lies a pregnant, upset Bridget. She turns her gaze away from me and my heart drops. We were getting along so well! I'd really love for us to be friends so I can also learn some things about my daughter. Now we are back to square one.
Lisa settles next to Bridget and folds her arms. Makhosi is glaring at her intensely. She does that a lot when she reads people's emotions or worries. It's a gift that she has. At times it gets uncomfortable trust me, I've been there done that.
"You are angry." Makhosi says still staring at her.
"Pardon?"-Lisa.
"Angry at the world, angry at your father, angry at God. There is so much anger inside of you that you are even numb to pain."- Makhosi.
Bridget's eyes quickly turn to worry. Lord knows how much I want to build a relationship with her.
"You are so determined to push everyone away Lisa."
Lisa's eyes become teary and the tears betray her and she looks away.
"Who is she?" Bridget asks.
"Our traditional seer. This is pretty much a normal thing." I say.
"Bridget." - Makhosi.
And she turns to look at her.
"The ancestors are on your side mntanam." - Makhosi.
She hesitantly nods her head.
"Leaving will only cause more problems and more bad omens so it's best if you stay for the night, we will kill the goat and eat. The ritual will happen tomorrow and then cleansing for both father and daughter and yourself as well. So I plead with you, for your daughter's health sake." -Makhosi.
"We won't leave."-Bridget.
"Ma!" Lisa exclaims.
"Did you not hear what she just said?" -Bridget.
"Well I will not be walked all over the same way you allow them to walk all over you ma. So I will stay right here till the ritual takes place."- Lisa.
"I promise no one will ever bother the both of you, you have my word." I say sternly.
Khanya is so adamant in staying in the room which forces Bridget to stay here too. So we don't push any further. As long as they aren't leaving that's a relief. I mouth a thank you to Bridget and she slightly nods.
"As you will be part of the Mbulali's, you are also welcome to attend Mandla's funeral."- Makhosi.
I look at her unbelievably. Is she serious right now?
"Yah, over my dead body." -Lisa.
"I'm about to get married and we don't have any spare time to attend his funeral."- Bridget.
I got a little jealous when she mentioned getting married. It could have been us. Someone budges into the room without knocking and we all turn to look at him.
"Thank God." Lisa whispers.
Bridget runs towards him and he embraces her into his arms.
"Are you okay baby? Stupid question...Come let's get out of here." He says.
Light skinned is still her type.
"Well it's a bit too late for that." -Lisa.
"I'm not going to let these Mbulali's kill my wife and baby, not whilst I'm alive! Wa otlwa le surname yabona. Lisa hao batli ho tsamaya?"
Superman wanna be.
"It's okay baby, we will leave soon after the ritual." - Bridget.
"This ritual better be right now because we are leaving!" -Him.
"You know son you should acknowledge the fact that there is an elder in front of you, as well as Lisa's real father." -Makhosi.
"Ausi kea kopa tuu, skang bora le nonsense oyi buwang. Ntate efeng? Ohhhh ntate eena ea ba lelekitseng ka tlung ea bona abasiya mostraateng! I don't think so." He says.
"If he's a man, I must be some unknown gender." He spits.
I'll forever regret what I did but there is no point in trying to explain myself.
"Ntate wa Lisa, put your family in order or else I will return here gunsblazing. But as for me and my family we are leaving. Lisa ha re ee!" He says.
Lisa grabs her suitcase in attempt to leave.
"Baby wait.." - Bridget.
"Baby wait eng? First day ofitla mona bawubitsa kasfebe! And you are telling me you want to stay here?" -Him.
"Kodwa vele uyisfebe uBridget." My mom says.
Oh God, this woman will take any opportunity to embarrass me. Where did she even rock up from.
"Yah ou lady, kesfebe saka! Chris Brown, put a leash on your dog." -Him.
"Who is he calling a dog?" -Mom.
"Can you all excuse us please." - Bridget says.
"In whose house?" -Mom.
"Mom!" -Me.
She raises her hands up in surrender and we all exit the room with my mom mumbling something.
"Menzi..." -Mom.
Now she's calling me with my second name.
"Ma please." I say dismissing her.
I swear the way this house is full of women, it's going to drive me nuts. We get outside and I release a huge sigh. Makhosi pats my shoulder and I just admire the great air circulation.
"Makhosi...why does Bridget need cleansing?" I ask.
She turns to look at me and her wise looking eyes somehow get wiser.
"To cleanse the dead remains if your baby from her womb. This baby won't survive if she doesn't get cleansing." -Makhosi.
Hold up!
"Dead remains of my baby?" I ask puzzled.
"The time you chased her out, she was pregnant." She says ever so calmly.
I close my eyes and open them again.
"And you are only telling me now??" I say unbelievably.
She keeps silent staring at whatever. Fuck!
