"i'm sorry to bother you," felix said nervously on the other end, "but, chris is really worrying me. he hasn't returned any of my calls, and i know you're all the way over there but he's a lot closer to you, and-"

hyunjin was staring blankly at the wall, the phone set on speaker mode as it rested in his lap. he somehow heard but didn't hear felix's voice. his mind was too busy running circles around his own problems, about how he could change how things went down with jisung.

it was currently snowing outside; the wind howled and blasted against the walls of the house, as if trying in vain to change something it couldn't.

but hyunjin tuned back into felix when he heard him say solemnly, "maybe he's sad because he thinks that i'm not going to ignore him now that changbinnie and i are dating..."

hyunjin shook his head. "you and changbin are dating?!"

oh, poor chris...

"mhm," felix answered, then continued in an extremely cheerful tone, "you know, i was going to tell you! i was so happy when changbinnie asked me out!! he's so cool that i thought for sure he would never look at someone like me, but... ah, i just felt bad feeling so happy when channie hyung is obviously stressed because of something."

hyunjin huffed, "yeah, because of y-" he caught himself, sweating nervously all of a sudden. "um! b-because of your... your present, probably! you know how chris always stresses over getting the perfect gifts for us. or, maybe he's just... busy, you know, w-with the... music... program."

felix sounded unconvinced. "hm, i don't know... he's never ignored my calls before..."

"that's gotta be it, lix. here, why don't i call him right now and check on him? i guarantee he's probably fine," hyunjin tried to sound nonchalant.

finally, felix said goodbye, and hyunjin picked up the phone, dialing chris' contact.

he thought of jisung with tears in his eyes, begging, "don't you know how long it took for me to-?! . . . .i don't want to relive it all again."

this time, he wasn't going to be selfish. he was going to push his own problems away. it was unlikely they could be fixed anyway.

hyunjin crossed and uncrossed his legs as the veins in them buzzed uncontrollably, having started to fall asleep.

"mm. sammy. what's up?"

hyunjin frowned to himself. chris sounded so glum; it hurt to hear his normally smiling and considerate friend so clearly disillusioned.

"chris... felix told me the news."

there was silence on chris' end, the kind of silence that spoke volumes.

hyunjin balled up the end of his sleeve and squeezed it to relieve the stress. "i'm so sorry."

chris interjected, "sorry? for me? sammy... you shouldn't worry about me. as long as lixie's happy, i'm happy. but you... how did things go with jisung? are you two back together?"

hyunjin bit his lip, unsure if he should accept chris' less than sufficient answer.

"uh-oh," chris said in a low tone, "the fact that you're not screaming with happiness into my ear says a lot. he didn't take you back? ah, is kkami okay?"

hyunjin sighed with the weight of the world. "he has a boyfriend."

"KKAMI?! the traitor; i already told berry that kkami was available," chris huffed in a joking tone.

"ha. no. jisung has a boyfriend. he's a real jerk, too. jisung wasn't there when i went over, so he answered the door. and he said jisung wasn't home so i should come back later. but he didn't want to tell me when jisung might be home," hyunjin pouted profusely, crossing his arms across his chest.

chris insisted, "okay, but we don't need to go around calling your ex's new boyfriend a jerk, hm? maybe he just felt the need to protect jisung from you, so he pushed you away? let's be honest, jisung probably told him about you being his ex. . ."

hyunjin hummed to himself thoughtfully. "i guess you're right."

"so, is that it? are you gonna come back? you haven't seen jisung, have you?"

"oh, i did. i did see him," hyunjin muttered. "i went out in the morning for a run because i couldn't think, and i bumped into him while he was walking kkami. and... well, he... he basically told me it was useless to try again."

"ah, sammy. look at us, both in love with a great guy we didn't do enough to keep around."
