"Forty years ago, in our darkest moment, this candle blessed us with a miracle," Alma said, "and the greatest honor of our family has been to use our blessings to serve this beloved community." She smiled out at everyone in the crowd. "Tonight, we come together once more as another steps into the light to make us proud."
I smiled as little Mirabel stepped into a spot light. The golden butterflies embroidered on the dress I made for my niece glittered in the light.
She took a deep breath and nervously walked up the stairs. She stopped in front of Alma and touched the candle.
"Will you use your Gift to honor our miracle?" Alma asked. "Will you serve this community and strengthen our home?"
Mirabel nodded and turned to the door. She touched the door knob and the door shone. But instead of condensing into a picture of Mirabel and her powers as so many doors had done before, the door did something unexpected. The door faded away. Poor little Mirabel looked up at Alma as Alma's face fell.
Maya grabbed my hand tightly. "I want to leave."
I looked at my child. "Are you sure?"
Tears rolled down her face as she whispered to just me, "I don't want to hear her anymore, Mami..."
"Go ahead," I said as I glared up at Alma. Julieta hugged her youngest tight as Mirabel cried.
"I'm sorry," Alma said. "I don't know what went wrong. Everyone, if you are not a Madrigal I must ask you to leave."
People filled out, leaving my family - minus Maya - and Pepa's family standing on the ground floor. A storm grew around the room. "To your rooms," Pepa told her children as Félix led Pepa towards their room.
"Let's get some food girls," Julieta told her kids.
I kissed the top of Sofia and Fernando's heads. "You two head home and make sure Maya is okay. We'll be home soon."
"Okay, Mami," Sofia said, pulling her brother out.
Alma came down the stairs looking frantic. "Bruno, please tell us what happened."
"I don't know, Mami," Bruno said. "Looking into the future... It never goes well..."
"Please," Alma begged.
Bruno looked from me to his mother before giving in. "Okay."

I waited outside of Bruno's room for my husband so we could go home together. It as growing late before Bruno burst though the door. "I have to leave," he said.
"What?" I asked. "Why?"
"I just do," he looked around frantically. "I'm sorry, Mariposa but I can't stay."
"Bruno what are you ta-"
"I'm sorry!" Bruno said. "It's for the best!" He kissed me rougher and more hurriedly than he ever had and ran down the hall towards the front door.
"Bruno!" I called after him as I attempted to follow. "Wait!"
"Mariposa!" Alma said accusingly. "Where is Bruno?"
"He ran out," I yelled, tears rolling down my face.
"You didn't stop him?"
"Do I fucking look like I could have stopped him?!" I screamed at her. "I only have one god damn foot!"
Alma pushed past me, throwing the door open but soon came back in, soaking wet. "You did this!"
"Me?!" I yelled. "What about you? Bruno didn't want to do that stupid reading for you at all! I would have left too!"
"Leave my house!" Alma yelled.
"Happily!" I screamed out. "But I won't be back until you apologize!"
"For what?"
"For never treating us like family! For only caring about what I could do for you! For judging my children for the gifts your miracle gave them!"
"Out!" Alma pointed at the door.
I paused only half a second at the door, silently apologizing to Julieta and Mirabel, before starting into the raging storm.
