Takes place when Mariposa is 14, Bruno is 12, and Rosa is 10.

No one really asked for this but... Mariposa only has a middle school (formal) education.
Here's why:

This was written after the story was completed.

I silently wiped tears away from my eyes as Rosa sobbed into my dress. "It's okay," I said quietly as I stroked her hair.

"Mariposa?" Bruno's voice aske quietly behind me. "What now?"

I looked down at my little sister. "Now we grieve."

"But then-"

"Bruno," I said, meeting his eyes. "Not right now."

Bruno stared for a second before nodding. "I'll find you guys something to eat."

~~~
Rosa had cried herself to sleep on the couch as I quietly read to her as our mother had for years when a soft knocking came at the door. I marked the page and gathered my crutches to open the door. I opened it to reveal Bruno, loaded down with dishes and containers full of food.
"Can I come in?" he asked quietly.
I nodded and closed the door behind him. "Rosa is asleep on the couch."
"You should get some sleep too, Mariposa," Bruno said.
"I don't want to sleep right now," I said quietly. "But those areapas smell good."
"Those are from the Gustman family," he set everything on the table.
I fished the areapas from the pile of food and sat to eat. I'd refused dinner the night before and was staring.
"What will you and Rosa do now?" Bruno asked.
I sighed. "We'll stay right here. I'll raise Rosa myself.
"What?!" Bruno asked in surprise. "But you're only 14!"
"And Rosa is only ten," I said. "I can't take her away from our home."
"How will you make money?"
"Like my parents did, I guess," I shrugged. "I'm a good enough seamstress thanks to my father and in the meantime, I can keep up as a midwifes assistant... just until I prove myself as a seamstress."
"You'd have to drop your classes."
"Then I will," I said defiantly. "I don't care what it takes, Rosa and I are not leaving our home."
Bruno was quiet for a moment before he smiled at me. "You're the best big sister Rosa could ask for, Mariposa. I'll make sure that I bring you guys some food once a week. Julieta will be happy to help me make it for you."
"Thanks, Bruno," I smiled. "I think the town has definitely given up enough food to get through this week. I just hope it doesn't spoil before we get to eat it." I took another bite of my areapa.
