"Good morning, Mariposa," the shop owner said happily as I entered.

"Good morning, Mr. Lana," I smiled, setting down my basket. "Mrs. Lana," I greeted his mother.

"How can I help you today? White thread perhaps?" He chuckled, knowing I'd done Pepa's dress.

"Of course. And a special request for your wife," I smiled. "I need a light blue tool and matching thread for my new project."

"What is this project?" He asked curiously.

"Another wedding dress and suit."

"Is Rosa finally marrying the preacher's boy?"

"No," I said with a chuckle. "She is quite smitten though. Three months is still too early in their courtship for a proposal, I think."

"Who's requesting blue for a wedding then?" Lana asked as he handed me the white thread. "It's quite the color."

"The groom is quite the superstitious man," I smiled, pulling a few dollars from my back basket to pay for the thread. "'Blue is true' he said."

Lana's face lit up in excitement. "A superstitious groom, you say? It wouldn't happen to be Bruno Madrigal, would it?"

"Don't talk about him," Mrs. Lana snapped over her knitting. "That boy always gives me a bad feeling. Always stuttering and tripping over his own feet and telling people bad things are going to happen..."

"What do you mean?" I asked her.

"Last night my granddaughter asked him how long her fish would live, and he said it would die one day. This morning the fish was muerto!"

"Bruno-"

"Don't say his name!" She interrupted. "You'll call him to us."

I wanted to laugh at the very idea that my fiance could be summoned like a demon but I was more worried about setting the record straight. "Bruno didn't kill the fish. Your granddaughter probably overfed it. How old was the fish?"

"It was a pretty old fish," Mr. Lana admitted. "I'll give Mary your request."

"Thank you, sir," I said, pulling my basket onto my back. "Rosa will be delivering the baby clothes and picking up my cloth next week."

"Thank you," he smiled politely.

I opened my door and thought I heard Bruno talking to someone.

"I can't marry you, I love another."

"But, mi amor-"

"No."

Instantly confused that it sounded like he was cheating on me. I snuck to our open bedroom door. On the bed was Bruno but he was alone. I was intrigued as I watched unnoticed from the doorway.

Bruno lifted a rat slightly. "But who is this other man?" He lifted the rat in his other hand and made the high pitched voice I'd heard before. "It is... Your brother!" "No!" He made the other rat yell. I laughed and his attention was instantly on me, nearly dropping the two rats. "Mariposa! I didn't think you'd be home so soon!"

I leaned against the door frame with a smile as I looked over my fiancée and his pets. "What's going on?"

"I was just..." His head dropped in shame. "Just creating a telenovela..."

I chuckled and crossed to the bed. "Well keep going," I smiled. "Now I'm invested. I have to know if Yunna marries Anthony or Pedro."

Bruno chuckled as he smiled at me. "You know their names?"

"Of course I do, Bruno." Yunna crawled into my hand so I would pet her. "The rats important to you so they're important to me." I set Yunna down. "Now catch me up."

"Happy birthday, Bruno," Rosa said, setting a small cake with a single candle in front of him.

"Thank you, Rosa," he smiled.

"Wait," I said pulling my match book. "Old family tradition" I lit the candle. "Blowing out the candles on your birthday grants luck in the coming year. "

Bruno blew out the candle with a smile. "We're going to need it."

"What for?" Rosa asked.

"We have to go to family dinner tonight or Alma won't come to the wedding," I said.

"I want to make it very clear to you," Alma said, "I do not support this marriage." She folded her hands. "That said, I will be at your wedding. "

"Really?" I asked. I really thought it would take more convincing.

"Of course," Alma said. "While I'm not all that thrilled that Bruno is going against my wishes, I will support him. I want my son to be happy, so even if I don't like the person who makes him happy, I'll learn to live with it." I rolled my eyes.

"Thank you, Mami," Bruno smiled.

"Since your family will not be hosting, I will allow you to have your wedding in the Casita." Alma looked smug, as though her having more money - she'd had more time to save after all - meant she was more important than my little family.

Bruno and I looked at each other. "Actually, Alma," I said in fake apologetics, "as the head of my family, I am paying for the wedding. We're having the ceremony at the church."

"Not if you expect to move in here," Alma said firmly.

Bruno took a deep breath. "Actually, Mami, I'm going to m-move into Mariposa's house... But we'll be home for dinner at least once a week."

Alma's eye twitched but she gave a reserved nod. "Fine. The reception can happen here. Does that work for you?"

I smiled and nodded. "I can think of no where better."
