About a day later, Alan received a call from a family member that his maternal grandfather recently died. He was invited to attend the funeral tomorrow and accepted to come. After he accepted the invitation, he went downstairs to check up on Sara. She was cleaning the kitchen. Alan smiled as he watched her. Sara noticed Alan watching her.
Sara: Oh, hey Alan! I was just cleaning the kitchen for you.
Alan: Thanks. Sara, um.
Sara: Yes?
Alan puts his shoes on.
Alan: Can you keep an eye on the place? I have to go shopping.
Sara nodded and turned to him.
Sara: What are you buying?
Alan: I have to buy myself some clothes.
Sara: Oh. For what?
Alan looked down in silence and looked back at her.
Alan: It's my maternal grandfather. He passed away last night. A family member called me about it minutes ago.
Sara's ears flopped and looked down.
Sara: Oh... I'm sorry for your loss...
Alan pats her on the head and went for the door. Sara's reaction to getting pat on the head was delayed.
Sara: HUH?!
Alan enters his car and began to drive to the store. He is looking for something fancy to wear for the funeral.
Alan: I need a suit.
He looked at one of the ties and picked one up. He added the tie to the cart.
45 minutes later
Alan returns home with the stuff and looked around to see if Sara is around. Once Alan went upstairs to his room with the bag, Sara walked out of her room and sees him.
Sara: Hey! Did you buy anything for me besides your clothing?
Alan: Sara, uh... Actually, yeah. I bought a wallet for you to keep your card safe.
He reached into the bag and grabbed an empty wallet, tossing it to her. Sara caught it with her two hands. Alan quickly went into his room and unpacked his stuff. Sara watched as the door shuts.
Sara: Uh... thanks!
Sara went back into her room and closed the door behind her. Alan hangs his stuff in his closet except for his tie. He puts his tie on top of his drawer and walked out of his room. He then went to Sara's room and opened her door.
Alan: Sara. You got the time?
Sara: As a matter of fact, I do.
Sara sat down on her bed and looked up at him.
Alan: Remember what I said about my grandfather?
Sara: Mhm.
Alan: Well, have you ever heard of inheritance?
Sara: No. Can you give me the short version?
Alan: Okay. It's when a person who receives the money, property, or assets after the death of another individual. I won't explain further details to you, but it happens all the time.
Sara: Oh... So, does it mean you get money from your maternal grandfather?
Alan: Well... you can put it that way. I have to go to his funeral tomorrow. Can you make sure that the house is neat and tidy for me?
