Chapter 39

After three months...

"Oh, how cute this outfit is!" Evie says, looking at the onesie on her hands.

Next to her is Nikki who smiles lovingly at her. With them are her father, her stepmother and her brother Anthony. All of Nikki's bandmates are there with their wives. Little Laura sits next to Evie and looks enthusiastically at all the gifts Evie received at the baby shower. Anthony is also with his older sister, and he smiles at Laura.

"I don't know when the baby will have time to wear all these clothes," says Evie, looking at the many clothes everyone has given her.

"He or she will be a very stylish baby," Heather chuckles.

Everyone there is giggling.

"Sure," Evie says.

Sharise gets up from her seat and hands Evie a newborn dress with gold embroidery.

"I know you don't know what gender your baby is," says the blonde, smiling at the tiny dress. "But when I saw it, I couldn't help but buy it. Is wonderful! I hope to have a daughter someday and dress her up with all the cute dresses I'll see."

"Thank you, Sharise," Evie says, taking the dress and looking at it fondly.

"Even if this baby is a boy," says Nikki looking tenderly at his wife, "we will have a daughter in the future."

"Are you already thinking about another baby when this one is not yet born?" Heather asks, smiling.

"Why not?" Evie says, smiling at her husband. "A big family is a happy family."

"In a few years we won't be able to get into their house because it will be full with children," jokes Tommy, and everyone laughs, including Nikki and Evie.

Laura is watching Evie's baby bump, which has grown a lot in recent months. Evie now walks and gets out of bed with difficulty.

The little girl puts her hands on the baby bump, catching the attention of her godmother who is looking at her with curiosity.

"I can't wait for the baby to be born and play with her!" Says the girl enthusiastically.

"Me too!" Anthony adds quickly. "I'll give him my toys to play with."

"The baby will be a girl!" Laura hisses at Anthony.

"Nay! The baby will be a boy and I will give him my collection of dinosaurs!"

"Keep dreaming!" Laura folds her arms and snorts.

"Anthony!"

"Laura!"

Every parent rebukes their child for being rude with each other. Instead, Evie chuckles, smiles heartily, and says:

"Surely, regardless of gender, the baby will love to spend time with both of you."

"Oh, I feel something!" Laura shouts that she still has her hand on the baby bump and feels something moving.

"It looks like the baby can't wait to meet you too," Evie smiles and looks down at her tummy.

"Woah! I can see how he can move!" Anthony points to the baby bump.

Evie laughs, watching her tummy move. The baby has grown so much lately that the movements can be seen through her skin.

Her brother also put his hand on the tummy, amazed by what he just sees. Something unusual for him and Laura.

The next day...

Last night, after the guests left, Nikki and Evie went to bed immediately, being very tired.

Now it's morning and they're both in bed.

Evie opens her eyes slowly, awakened by the touch on her baby bump. Next to her, is Nikki who strokes her tummy with his eyes fixed on it.

A soft smile appears on her sleepy face and she says to her husband:

"Are you both having secret conversations?"

Nikki is a little surprised, because he didn't notice that Evie woke up. He looks up at her in amazement, then smiles warmly and says:

"I didn't mean to wake you. I woke up and saw this little one moving. Don't you feel like the baby is breaking your belly?" He asks and looks down at the tummy.

Evie chuckles and replies:

" Sometimes I really feel like the baby is going to break my belly."

"This little one doesn't have enough space there anymore," Nikki smiles.

"Two more months and our baby will be out," Evie smiles at the tummy. "Sometimes I feel like its doing martial arts there," the brunette chuckles. "So if you get closer, it may leave a bruise on your face."

"I assume that," Nikki smiles and leans down, resting his head on the baby bump and stroking it easily. "You weren't born yet, but I love you so much."

Evie smiles and runs her fingers through Nikki's raven hair. He looks up at her and says:

"I love you as much as I love your mother."

Evie's smile grows even bigger. Nikki looks at the baby bump and kisses it. Evie immediately says, amused:

"You know the baby's bottom is there, right? For a month now, the baby has been sitting upside down, preparing for birth."

Nikki doesn't say anything. He just laughs and gets closer to Evie, now at her level and takes her in his arms and kisses her softly on the lips. After that, he takes a serious look and looks back her baby bump.

"Is everything okay?" Evie asks him.

"I think about something..." Nikki says in an insecure voice and a lost look.

"What exactly are you thinking about?" Evie starts to worry.

"I'm thinking..." He sighs. "If I'm going to be a good father. You know... I'm thinking about my father... What he did and didn't want to be a part of my life..."

"Nikki? What do you say?" Evie frowns at him and takes his hand in hers, staring into his eyes. "You are not like your father! You want to be in our child's life. You're not like him..."

"I know Evie... But I wonder if I'm really going to be a good father as I imagine. What if I make mistakes?"

"You won't! You will definitely be the best dad," the brunette smiles at him. You know what happened to me a few years ago... my mother... who was actually my grandmother and hid this secret from me for 20 years. And my real mother, who I thought was my sister ...We will not make mistakes as our parents did. We will raise our child with love, care and attention."

He smiles at her, strokes her cheek and looks at the baby bump again.

He hears Evie's voice in his head:

'You will be the best father.'

He hopes that's exactly what will happen. He could never forgive himself for making his child sad, disappointed. As his father did. He can't do that. He will do anything to see the happiness on his child's face.
