Leave your voicemail at the beep. Instead of leaving a boucemail, I hung the phone up knowing he wasn't going to listen to it in the first place."Did your brother answer, Reagan?"
I turned the hall and watched as my mother got her a sew in because she favored weave more than her own hair which was crazy to me.
"Nah, he didn't. I wish you and daddy would just buy my car already!"
I knew my mom was probably about to flip out on my because her hairstylist, out cousin Chanita was here, but I didn't care. It was time for me to get me another car again, just because I wrecked my first one doesn't mean I shouldn't get a new one.
"You see what I'm talking about Nita?"
"Mmhm, girl. I see what you talking about Rose."
I rolled my eyes, pushing my hand on my hip. She probably ran her mouth about me to our cousin which I wasn't too find of since she stayed in all of my business.
"You are rude and distesptful. You didn't even speak to your cousin and then you have the nerve to have an attitude with me because you can't get a new car."
I laughed. "Who said I had an attitude?"
"Who said it? It's all over your fucking face, Reagan. Please don't start with me before I whoop your ass."
I was seventeen going on eighteen and she had the nerve to tell me she was going to beat me, that was a lie because she had never laid a hand on through my whole life. My mother was just being fake right now in front of Chanita. She was talking to me this way to show that she had me in check, which I was not about to support.
"That's really funny, considering the fact that you've never put your hands on me mama. Real funny, all I did was tell you that I wanted a new car and you had to start showing out in front of Cha-"
"I am not showing out--I am a grown ass woman who happens to be your mama. Now you got one more time to say something back to me smart and you won't be going to any party this weekend!"
I rolled my eyes, about to respond as my phone started to ring. I looked done to see who was calling and noticed that it was Kendrick, instead of Karmelo calling; my brothers.
"Wassup?"
"Chilling, chilling. What's wrong with you?"
I was about to respond but realized I was still around my trifling momma and walked upstairs to my bedroom, and slammed my door.
"Your mama is what's wrong with me."
I could already tell he was smoking as he started to cough and laugh making me laugh too. I loved my brothers, they both gave the best advice and were always there for me rather than my own parents. Being nothing but two years older than me, they were only the ones with my fathers last name while I carried my mommas. Simply because they were broken up when she had me and it was done out of spite.
"What she did now, Reg?"
It was a normal thing for my brother to refer to me as Reg. I remembered when I was about ten and he gave me that nivkname, and ever since him and my other have been calling me Reg.
"Showing out in front of--"
"Chanita, babysis just let her have that moment. You know she always got to have shit to prove, and you know she barely get to talk to anybody on her side of the family except for when Chanita doing her hair. So let her have that moment, alright?"
"Alright,"
I responded because I understood what my brother said because of my father. He always restricted my mother from talking to any females on the side of her family because of something in the past. My mother, Rose's family was a police family and with her being married to my father, things changed, and that involved talking with her family."So what you been up too?"
I smiled. "Nothing really since your father canceled the trip. What about you, Ken?"
"Don't do that, Reagan. You know how shit be with dad and the business, it's hard running that shi--"
"Which is why you don't want it huh, Ken?"
"I never said I didn't want it, but you know I got other plans. I just can't leave my family behind."
Kendrick was and always would be a family man. He put us over his dreams and what he wanted to be which was a painter. He had always been good at painting, but daddy made sure in high school that although he was in this or that, that he recognized what was really important; over what was a hobby.
"I don't care about all of that, Ken. If it was me, rather or not I made a promise, my dreams would come first over this shit, and you, you have a talent Kendrick that you need to fulfill."
He laughed. "I appreciate you saying that sis, but you know I can't leave that easily."
"Well, it don't even matter. I'll be shooting my way out of this life if I was you."
I could picture him smiling now as he laughed. My brothers were both light skinned, brown eyes with a fro on both of their heads, but the only way we could tell the difference between the two was that one had a goatee while the other one didn't, since they both were twins.
"That's why you the rebel of the family. Sometimes I can't even believe you my sister cause' you so toxic to the bullshit, it just know not to ruin you, bruh."
I listened to my brother as he called me toxic to our parents when I just called it immune. I could deal with it, had been dealing with it for seventeen years. I was just waiting on the moment were I could move and live on my own.
"You'll let me move in with you and Saya?"
My brother had a girlfriend of two years named Saya. She's dark skinned with a shape that I often looked at and wished I had.
"I would, but you know they ain't bout' to let you move cause' despite how you feeling bout ma right now; she'll miss you."
I sighed, but I understood.
"Yeah, whatever, but have you seen Karmelo?""Nah, I ain't seen him nor talked to him since last night. His ass be acting dumb when I tell him that shit going on and he need to be alert."
I swallowed the limp that was in my throat because out of Kendrick and Karmelo, Melo happened to be my favorite and I was just hoping and praying that he was alright.
"He should be good though, Reg. He strapped and loaded, you know that."
I hope so.
