Chapter forty four: Project Y.A.I

Before Natasha could say another word Nick embraced her in a hug, she was taken back by it but instantly hugged him back. "Are you kidding me Romanoff?" he said

She pulled away from the hug and looked at him, "Why would you do that?"

"Why would I do what?" "Why would you sacrifice yourself?"

"Nick, you know I didn't have any other choice"

"I'm just glad to have you back" he said making her smile

Maria was next to wrap her in a hug, Natasha and her used to be very close at their time in SHIELD. "I missed you so much" Maria whispered into Natasha's neck as they hugged each other close. "I missed you too"

When they pulled away from the hug they smiled at each other as their attention got back to Fury. "What are you doing here, how did you know I was back?" Natasha asked

"You should know I got eyes everywhere by now Romanoff" he said

"We came here for something else, I think you might remember what I'm talking about"

"What is it?" Natasha asked, He handed her a file

"Project Y.A.I?" Natasha looked at him with wide eyes, "Are you serious?"

"What is project Y.A.I?" Yelena asked

~Flashback:The avengers compound, 6 months after the battle of Sokovia~

"Romanoff" Nick called as he entered the compound

"Hey, what are you doing here?" she asked

"I need to talk to you" Natasha nodded as they walked to the meeting room, Nick closed the door. "What's going on? this seems important"

"You remember when I told you about the Avengers initiative?" "Yes"

Nick placed a stack of papers in front of her, she looked at it and read what it said. "What is project Y.A.I?"

"It's a backup plan for if all of you, well, when all of you will pass or retire"

Natasha frowned, "What are you talking about?" "Open the file"

She did like as he said and looked back at him confused

"Young Avengers initiative?"

"There are some talents out there, again, it's a backup plan for when your time will pass"

"Do you not trust us to stay alive, Fury?"

"It's not what I mean, This project is for when you retire and you will, believe me"

"You said it's for when we will pass"

"Romanoff, we both know, not all of you can live forever"

"So you just plan on replacing us?" "No, this plan probably won't happen, like I said, it's only for backup"

"So what does it mean?" "I will have a young team, only for when in need, but it won't happen now, not for a long time"

"So you're telling me that when we die you'll replace us with teenagers?"

"Natasha, you were a teenager when you became a SHIELD agent and you know that, just trust me on this, we will need it"

"Okay" she sighed

"So it won't happen now right?" "No, and not for a long time"
