Cadence Harper
I squinted at the light that is directly facing my eyes. I sat up and saw no one around. When I stood up to walk going out of the room, I saw Topher talking with Zary outside my transparent door.
It's dark outside and I know it's impossible to see them in the dark.
A pang of --
No. I'm not jealous of Zary. Why would I be? Topher likes Zary and I support him with that. Topher would be happy if I support him. So, I'm going to man up and go out of that room and face them like I didn't feel anything a few seconds ago.
"Hey, Trophy." I called out. Topher's head spun around and so is Zary. Zary smiled then waved goodbye to Topher who is ascending to me. I straighten the hem of my shirt and grinned at him who is looking good wih those shirt and beach shorts. "Where are we going?" I asked.
"First, Wear something appropriate. Girl, You look like a hot mess." Hot Mess.
I suddenly felt self-concscious. I looked at myself and saw that I am just wearing his shirt and girl boxers. I quickly went in the room and heard Topher laughing at the background. I don't know why I always have to be nervous around him. It's not that it's a big deal for me. Besides, I went here for Kyle not for Him.
When I was done wearing an appropriate dress for our "Night at the beach" date, I went out. I was expecting a mouth hanging expression from him but no luck. He just stared at me the clapped. "Good thing you wore a dress. That's your first time wearing one."
"Uh, I had nothing to choose." Truth is, I prepared this dress only for Kyle. But now? Why not wear it already, right?
"C'mon, the restaurant will be close by this time." He grabbed my wrist and dragged me gently. I don't know why it suddenly became a slow motion. I stared at his hand holding mine and then his back who is excited to lean on a fancy restaurant chair.
Topher stopped walking the time we set foot by the sand. Suddenly, I felt guilty for not waking up because we saw the restaurant closed already. Topher looked at the restaurant and I can see the sadness in his eyes. "It was my Grandpa's favorite place. Now it's permanently closed." He spoke while he avert his gaze down the sand.
I settled my hand on his shoulder, "It's okay Topher, I'm here." I can see small droplets of salty tears as he wipe them away with his palm. He looked back at me the beamed.
"C'mon, I have something to show you." He suddenly scooped me by sliding his arm through my legs then the other around my shoulder. He carried me like a bride then ran going to the water.
"Oh my God, Where are you taking me?!" He just laughed. "Topher, Put me down!" I yelled at him but he didn't listen. "Christopher Paxton!" He stopped then dropped me on the water. "What the hell Topher?!"
"You asked me to drop you, And so I did." He kept chuckling on my side while I look at my soaked dress. For revenge, I poured a handful of water and threw it to him. He looked at me with mouth forming a shape of an "O" then did the same. We kept playing on water when suddenly he stopped me forcely. "Look," He pointed at the shore and we both saw Kyle with Zary. Kyle was hitting on Zary and was doing these flirty things with her which Zary easily coped up with and flirted as well. Surprisingly, I didn't feel jealous about it.
I looked at my side and found no one beside me. I searched around the beach and didn't find Topher. I don't know where he went but I know that he is sulking right now and he just didn't want me to see him crying because he doesn't want to look like a weakling.
I started swimming back shore when I found Zach on the other side of the beach. He is with a girl. Good thing he's enjoying the vacation like how Kyle enjoys it with Zary. Unlike Topher and I, We don't seem to enjoy the whole thing. It's like a torture for the both of us.
When Zach found me staring, he started forwarding to me and greeted me. "Why are you swimming with your dress on?" He asked as he helped me get off the water.
"Topher pulled me in."
He looked around and then faced me, "Where is he?" He started rubbing of the weeds that are attached in my dress.
"I think he left me. I don't know. After seeing your sister and Kyle together, I bet he had a hard time contemplating about everything right now. I pity him."
"You know, Topher is okay. The problem with him is, He is too nice. He can't be nice all the time. Topher have to man up and go fulfill his destiny. Like what I'm about to do now." I stared at him, confused at what he said. He slowly leaned forward and attached his lips on my ear. "I'll do anything for you, Cades. I promise you that I will fulfill my dreams, and that is you." He pulled away and smiled. I smiled back but it was forced. I'm having goosebumps about this. I stared down on my hand wherein the pearl ring lies. I slowly took it off and handed it to him. "What are you doing Cades?"
"I'm sorry Zach, but I don't see you that way. I don't see you like the way you look at me. I can't like you that way. You're my friend, that's it. I'm sorry Zach." I started to walk away.
I feel like I just friendzoned him. I feel so guilty because he tried his best to get my heart but seriously, even if he is so close on getting there.
I walked away and headed to the grill place where my room is located and found Topher's back.
I wanted to go to him but was stopped when I saw him flirting with someone.
