Sitting in the front row of graduation, as salutatorian, had reece bouncing her leg up and down in nervousness. she knew she shouldn't be anxious, she didn't have to make a speech, that was gwen's job, all she had to do was walk up there and accept her diploma. she was practicing ways in her head to avoid tripping and embarrassing herself in front of all her fellow students, faculty, and her friends and family.

what worried her more though, was the fact that peter had yet to show up. pulling out her phone, she clicked his contact and waited a few seconds, listening to the ringing, before he finally picked up.

"hey, babe. i'm, i'm sorry. i'm running a bit late." his voice was raised and reece could hear the disturbance in the background.

"does you being late have anything to do with the sirens i'm hearing?" reece harshly whispered, pushing her phone closer to her ear. it was almost time for gwen's speech.

"....what sirens?" peter played dumb after a break of silence reece scoffed, shaking her head.

"well, where are you, skater?" she asked, picking at the skin around her nails.

"1st and broadway, 2nd and broadway, 3rd and broadway." he listed on. "uh, five minutes, ten tops."

"gwen's going up for her speech and by the time she's done, your ass better be here." she threatened, yet a smile played on her face.

"i'll be right there. promise." he hung up and reece put her phone under her seat, now paying attention to her best friend and her valedictorian.

"good morning, esteemed faculty and families of my fellow graduates. it's an honor to be standing up here today. i know we all think that we're immortal. we're supposed to feel that way. we're graduating. but, like our brief four years of high school, what makes life valuable is that it doesn't last forever." reece's eyes started to well up, thinking of her dad. "what makes it precious is that it ends... and i know that now more than ever and i say it, today of all days, to remind us that time is luck. so don't waste it living someone else's life. make yours count for something. fight for what matters to you, no matter what. because even if we fall short, what better way is there to live?" gwen finished off her speech with a smile, winking at reece who cheered and started clapping for her best friend, along with the rest of the crowd.

"now, we will ask our salutatorian, reece cambrey, to step up." gwen announced, reece took a deep breath. she forgot she had to stand up there with gwen to give out diplomas.
