Chapter 23

I got back to my room and quickly applied my makeup. My hair was mostly dry but I didn't have time to straighten it. I threw on the outfit me and Ali had chosen the night before. It was a white crop top and some lose blue shorts. This outfit showed a lot of skin but I made sure not to eat today so I wouldn't look giant. I heard my phone ding from my bed side table and ran over to look at it. The time was 4:22 and I had a text from Hayes.

Hayes🐻📷:Hey, meet me at board walk for our date. See you at 4:30❤️
Me: ok. see ya then xx

I grabbed my phone and walked down the stairs. Ali finally got up and was with all the boys in the kitchen.

"Byeee guysss" I said as I walked out the door.
"Have fun on your date" nash called
"But not too much fun" Ali added
"Beth wait" I heard someone call me as I closed the door. The door opened again and Matt came out.
"Hey Matt" I smiled.
"Hey, I'll walk you to the boardwalk." He said.
"Ok"

I was looking down and there was an awkward silence. Matt broke it and said "So I met a girl"
I looked at him and he was smiling and looking at his feet.
"Oh my gosh Matt! What's her name?"
"Chloe, it's not for sure yet but we've been on one date and I think I'm going to ask her to be my girlfriend."
"That's awesome Matthew, I'm really happy for you"
"Thanks beth"
"Wait, when did you meet her? When was your first date?" I asked. Now that I think of it. Matt hasn't been around the house as much lately.
"Well I met her at the beach. And I took her out for dinner last night. And I'm meeting her at the board walk at 7 tonight."
"Aww. When will I get to meet her?" I teased while nudging him with my elbow. We were walking along the sidewalk on the beach that led to the boardwalk when I got another text from Hayes.

Hayes🐻📷: Come to the ice cream place when you get here.

I didn't bother to text him back because I was right by the ice cream place. I stopped and looked at Matt.

"I'll see you later Matt. Thanks for walking me here" I said and hugged him.
"Anytime Beth, have fun with Hayes"
"Ok have fun with Chloe" I cooed. He shook his head, laughed and walked away.

I walked in the familiar shop and and saw Hayes sitting down at a table by the window. He had on a dark blue button up shirt and khakis. His hair was spiked up and he looked hot af. He was starring at his phone and didn't notice me walk in. I pulled the chair out and he looked up and smiled.
"Hey" I smiled as I sat down
"Hey, you look beautiful."
"Haha thank you"
"Come on let's go get ice cream" he said standing up and holding my hand.
We walked up to the counter and looked at the flavors. A tired looking old man walked up and said "what can I get you two"

"Can I get bubble gum please"I said
"Can I get cookie dough?" Hayes asked.
"Of course" the old man spoke quietly. He came back to the counter and handed me the two cones while Hayes took out his wallet. He handed the man money but he said "oh no, it's on the house. You too are a lovely couple. You remind me of my wife and I" he said and smiled. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a picture. He handed Hayes the picture with a smile on his face and a thin line of tears in his eyes. We looked at the picture and it was a man and a women. They were in a field surrounded by flowers.
The women was looking at the ground smiling and the man was looking at her adoringly. I could tell how much they loved each other just by the way he was looking at her and how she was blushing. The man looked just like Hayes but older and the women had light blonde hair like me.
"She passed a little over a year ago" he said "we were together since high school and I never stopped loving her" he said, not breaking the wide smile on his face.
"She's beautiful" I said.
"Thank you. You look just like her, ya know? You even walk and carry yourself like she did when she was your age."
"I'm very sorry for your loss" Hayes said handing the picture back to him.
"Ohh it's ok young man. She's in a much better place now. She had waited for the day she died for a very long time" He said with the smile now faded. I knew exactly what he meant because of the cuts on her legs in the picture. I usually had a pretty good eye for people who were in a dark place and who were struggling to keep from shattering. Mostly because I'm currently in a bad place, but I'm slowly getting better.
"Well look at me going on." He laughed. "Enjoy your ice cream kids"
"Thank you" we said and walked out onto the board walk.
"You do look like her Beth" Hayes said.
"No way, shes so pretty" I said squinting my eyes at the bright sun that was setting.
"Beth-" he started when I cut him off
"So where are we going Hayes" I said changing the subject.
"The beach" he said smiling.
"The beach?" I asked smiling.
"Yup I have a surprise" he said. We got to the sand and we both took off our shoes and walked along the water. We talked about school, and cheer, and random things like how I hate soda and how he's allergic to kiwis. We walked up to some big rocks and Hayes said "let's climb on top of them"
"Ok but you're going to need to help me" I laughed. He climbed up to the top and offered me his hand. I got up to the top after a few steps and realized how high we were. I looked around and noticed a blanket laid out.
"Did you do this?" I asked Hayes. On the blanket was a basket and there was two plates set up and cups.
"Ya haha. Ali helped me though"
"That's so sweet Hayes. Thank you"
We sat down and he pulled out the picnic basket. He took out some containers and a big bowl.
"Ali told me what your favorites were" he said pouring all the containers into the bowl. He was making a salad, one of my favorite foods. He added ham, spinach, cucumbers, tomatoes, carrots, and some mushrooms. He drizzled on my favorite dressing, balsamic vinegar and started mixing it with two wooden spoons. He put them on our plates then looked up and smiled at me.
"Thank you Hayes." I smiled.
"For what?" He asked
"For this date and for everything..."
"It's my pleasure Beth, you know I really care about you."
"I care about you too Hayes. I really like you."
"I've wanted you since the first day I met you" he said which caught my attention.
"Me too" and before I finished my sentence, Hayes was leaning in, and so was I. I closed my eyes and our lips touched. I felt fireworks going off in my stomach and butterflies swirling around my head. We pulled away and Hayes said "you are so beautiful Beth". Instead of denying it, I blushed and looked down. For once, I felt like the person calling me beautiful meant it. Hayes made me feel... I don't know, he makes me feel special.
"Come on Beth I have something else planned" Hayes said as we finished our food. He got up and offered me his hand. He pulled me up and I brushed my self off. I stepped back and tripped over something. I started to lose my balance and was falling trying to step back and regain it but a force was pulling me down. Hayes noticed me tripping and quickly reached forward to grab me. He wrapped his arm around my waist and pulled me close to his chest.
" I thought cheerleaders were suppose to have good balance" he laughed
"Well Hayes, little did you know, you are on a date with the worlds clumsiest cheerleader" I shot back smiling. We were walking together and Hayes said he had another surprise. The sun was almost down now and I was admiring it while he went to get the other surprise. I heard a click and turned around to realize that Hayes took a picture of me with his phone. He looked down at his phone and smiled.
"I know I keep saying it but you truly are the most beautiful girl I've ever seen." He said while still looking at the photo of me on his phone. I smiled and walked up to him. I put my hands on his cheeks and pulled him in for a kiss. I pulled away quickly and he looked at me confused.
"Well aren't you going to tell me what the next surprise is?" I laughed. He smiled and grabbed my hand.
"Come on. My cars over here" he said. He led me to the familiar car that we rented. He drove the big jeep over to the beach. He opened up the passenger door for me then went around to the driver side. He got in and reached into his pocket.
"Ok Beth, I know your birthday is next week so I have an early birthday present for you." I'm not going to lie, I totally forgot that my birthday is coming up.
"Hayes you didn't have to" I started
"But I wanted to" he handed me a small fancy, pink envelope with a jewel for the seal. I carefully opened it but before I did I look up at Hayes who looked excited for me to open it. I smiled and reached in and pulled out three slips of paper.
