"Rain Won't Hurt You..." (Steven Universe)

Summary: While alone in the temple with Steven, Peridot gets scared by the heavy rain outside, and slips into littlespace. Can Steven calm them down?

As stated in previous chapters, Peridot will use they/them pronouns in this chapter!

Their little age is 5!

Peridot sat on the couch in the temple. They and Steven were just watching tv. "I love this episode!" Steven cheered, watching his favorite show, 'Crying Breakfast Friends' with excitement gleaming in his eyes.

"I still do not understand the point of this mediocre program." Peridot crossed their arms, putting their feet up comfortably on the coffee table in front of them.

Steven just grinned. Suddenly, they heard the sound of rain, heavy rain, pounding down on the temple roof. Peridot yelped in surprise. "W-What is that noise?"

Steven peeked outside. "Oh, it's raining!" He cheered. Peridot didn't seen excited though, they seemed scared. They curled up in a ball, shaking and hugging their legs.

Steven noticed they were scared and sat beside them. "Peridot? What's wrong?" He reached out to her. The green gem whimpered and clung to him Suddenly.

Steven blinked in confusion but huggged them, feeling them shaking against him. Peridot was whimpering too, and and tears glistening in her green eyes, scared.

Steven frowned more, noticing that they were starting to slip into littlespace. He knew Peridot was a little and would sometimes slip when scared or upset.

"S-Scawy..." Peridot whimpered. They didn't use any of their formal speech when little, of course. Steven rocked them gently. "What's scaring you, Dot? Can you tell Steven?" He spoke very gently to them.

"W-Wain..." Peridot whimpered. Steven nodded, understanding. "You're scared because it's raining hard?" He was confused. There was no thunder or lightening, what was so scary about rain.

Peridot nodded. "Wain scawy..." They kept shaking and whimpering as Steven continued trying to calm them down.  He had never seen them so scared before.

"Aw Dot, the rain can't hurt you...sure, it's coming down hard, but its just just water, it's harmless." Steven whispered, holding the upset green gem in his lap gently, rocking them back and forth.

"Woud..." Peridot pouted. Steven nodded, rubbing their head. "Yes, it's loud, but rain can't hurt you, I promise." Peridot clung to him tightly in response to that.

They thought the rain coming down so hard was scary, even though there was no thunder or lightening. They also didn't want to get wet by the rain at all. They cuddled against Steven, whimpering.

Steven held them close, humming and singing gently, trying to find something to calm them down. "Shh, it's okay Peridot, I'm here and you're safe, I promise..." He whispered, rocking them gently still.

Peridot whimpered, still a bit scared. "It svawy, S' Teven..." Peridot clung to him more. Steven hummed, getting an idea that he thought about trying with them.

"Hey Dot, how about if I show you rain isn't scary?" He suggested gently. After a few minutes, he felt Peridot not against his chest. Steven smiled and picked them up. Peridot resumed clinging to him.

Steven opened the temple door. Peridot yelped in surprise. "No, no, no! Cwose it, pwease S' Teven, cwose da door!" They whimpered, tearing up from fright.

Steven rubbed their back gently. "Shh, it's okay Dot, I'm here, okay? You're safe with Steven..." Peridot looked up at them hesitantly. "Pwomise...?" Steven nodded. "I promise..." He did a pinkie promise.

Peridot started feeling a bit less scared. Steven gently held out his hand, letting rain fall on it from the doorway. Peridot looked up at him. "W-What are you doing...?"

Steven smiled. "I'm showing you that rain isn't scary." He let it run on his hand. "See? It's just like water on my hand, and it kind of tickles!" He giggled a bit, smiling.

Peridot hummed softly. They didn't seem so scared anymore. "Do you want to feel the rain on your hand too?" Steven asked as Peridot hesitantly nodded. "Yesh..."

Steven awed and gently took their hand in his. Peridot yelped in surprise as rain pattered down on her small, green hand. It tickled, bit it didn't hurt. And it was cold. It felt just like cold water. Not scary at all!

"See? It's not scary, rain won't hurt you!" Steven nuzzled her gently. "I'm proud of you for being so brave, Dot!" Peridot cuddled into him. "Fank woo S' Teven!"

They weren't scared anymore! "Wain is not vewy scawy!" They giggled as Steven nodded, hugging them. "That's right, rain I perfectly safe!" He grinned cheerfully.

Peridot giggled. They knew that now! The duo spent the rest of the day watching watching rain, with Peridot in littlespace, playing with one of her best friends.
