Luke

I reach out my hand for the brown-haired girl to shake, smiling brightly. This place could use a little brightness, and this girl seems like she could too. "I'm Luke." She grabs my outstretched hand lightly and shakes it slowly.

"Audrey," she says, not even trying to smile.

"What a beautiful name," I tell her. She just stares at me blankly. "Alright," I mumble, letting the nurse lead me to my bed across the room. I grin at the nurse as she walks out of the room, and lean back in my bed. "So, what're you in here for?" I ask, trying to act casual.

She looks at me out of the corner of her eye. "I'm sorry, I don't remember inviting you into my personal life."

"It's personal?" I ask. "So, like, an STD?"

"Ew!" she almost shrieks. "No, look, I just don't go around telling random people these things."

"I'm not a random person," I say, smirking. "I'm Luke Hemmings, I'm 18 years old, and I'm here because I was hit by a car. See? Now you know all you need to know about me. We're basically best friends now."

She stays silent for a minute, making a face. "You were hit by a car?"

I nod.

"How?"

"Don't look at me like I'm stupid, okay?" I say. "Maybe I was saving a kid from the oncoming traffic!"

"Oh, I'm so sorry," she says, raising her eyebrows, sarcasm dripping from her voice. "Did you save a kid from oncoming traffic?"

I cross my arms and look away from her, not wanting to talk anymore. We sit like that for a few minutes until she speaks up. "I'm sorry. I've been here for two days, I haven't slept at all, and I haven't had the best week." I sigh but keep looking away from her.

"I'm Audrey Brooks, I'm 18 years old, and I'm here because I tried to kill myself." I look up at her staring intently at the blank wall in front of her. "We're basically best friends now," she says, quoting me.

I smile weakly at her. "I'm sorry."

"It's alright," she says, although I can tell she's lying. "At least they didn't send me to a mental hospital. I thought they were gonna do that."

I nod, not knowing what to say. I will never understand why anyone would want to kill themselves. The world is an amazing place, you just have to look for the little beauties. Strong coffee, kids, art that makes you think, music, the ocean, really good books, new episodes of your favorite tv shows. I don't get how some people just don't see those things.

I look up as a Doctor James walks into the room. "Luke," he says. "We're going to fix you up a little and check you out to make sure you're not too badly hurt, but you'll be out of here within a few hours." I wave to Audrey and follow him out of the room.
