"Wh-why can't I..?" I never turned to face her, I just looked at the doorknob.
"Her funeral." Mamí sighed, I ignored what she said as I dropped my backpack and ran out the door, she quickly called out for me yet never chased.
Eventually, I found myself on the playground with some old memories of Tía. Maybe if I think hard enough, I can remember who the boy in the picture is...
Looking at the picture of me and the young boy still, I walked towards the swings, hopping on one.
Looking up at this sky, I felt tears starting to fall again. "I need Dolores, Mirabel... and Camilo." Suddenly, I broke down.
I can't do this without Tía... She was the only one there for me for years.
Not even Miguel was there for me, he hated me until a few months ago...
I hated the feeling of being alone, I wanted Tía Maria to come back already.
I didn't know how long I'd been looking at the sky crying, but I soon felt a tap on my knee. It was a little girl, probably four or five years old.
"Why are you crying?" The girl quickly asked me, "Are you sad?"
"O-oh! No, I'm completely fine!" I laughed, not wanting to make the girl sad.
She furrowed her eyebrows, "Then why are you crying??" She looked annoyed, I quickly came up with something.
"I was crying tears of happiness, my Papí just got a good job!" I smiled, remembering how I was with the kids when with Camilo, I chuckled, I guess always being with Tía changed me a bit around children. The girl tilted her head but just shrugged it off.
"I'm Valeria, what's your name?" She grinned, giving a similar vibe off to Mirabel's. She put her tiny hand out for me to shake before I spoke.
"Rosa, nice to meet you." I grabbed her hand as her eyes widened.
"You have such a better name than me!" She giggled, causing me to chuckle a bit. This little girl is somehow cheering me up after the death of my Tía... "I'm five years old."
So, around Antonio's age, I feel like they'd get along a bit well... "I'm fifteen, guess that means I'm much older than you!" I smiled, bending down to sit in front of her, cross legged.
She sat down after watching me do so, and we heard a voice from the distance. "...Valeria!" It was the voice of a woman, coming from behind me.
Valeria stood up, scoffing. Wow, I could never do that towards someone, haha. "Mama, I'm here!" She called out, I looked behind me.
I stood up as the woman approached us, picking the child up. "I'm so sorry, did mi hija bother you at all? She's such a trouble maker, stop running off like that!" The lady flicked her daughter lightly on the forehead, causing the girl to dramatically fall limp in her arms as if it hurt too much to move.
"I-it's fine... She's quite nice." I smiled lightly, being able to speak a bit more normally than usual.
"She.. was? Wait, I feel like I recognize you.." Valeria's mother put her finger up to her chin, finally realizing. "Oh, you were Maria Ortega's sobrina... I'm so sorry, I hope you are alright."
Then I really remembered why I was at the park, and my heart started racing. "O-oh, i-it's.. alright. I.. should go." I quickly waved before running back home.
Opening the front door, I noticed Mama was in the kitchen, writing stuff down. I quickly headed up to my room to change, looking through the dresses I made with Tía.
