As we walked into the room where the reception would be held, my thoughts and feelings spiraled out of control. That kiss was all I needed to be wrapped around Levi's finger. Even though I contained my nervous energy behind my calm facade, I couldn't help but feel like Levi didn't have the same sensation from the intimate moment, unlike me.
Falling in love would take a lot for me, but saying I was smitten was an understatement.
But just like prior times, few words were spoken between us. I tried to keep my conversation to a minimum, because I knew my cheeks would shine red if I even tried to speak to him.
"Wine?" I offered him when we were seated at our dinner table. We faced an endless amount of tables all filled with the Survey Corp that was within the walls, mixed with high ranking officials and other important people. It was safe to save Levi and I only knew about 10% of the people celebrating our "special day".
"No, thank you." Levi said. I knew he wasn't much of a drinker, but I thought since it was a special occasion, maybe he'd say yes.
I, on the other hand, needed the liquid encouragement. The shy girl within me just wanted to run into a corner, and process the whole situation that ran it's course so quickly. So I poured myself a nice tall glass of red wine and took a deep breath, knowing our night was far from over.
As we ate, multiple people came up to talk to us, well-mainly Levi. They congratulated him and talking about some of his past missions. I felt bad for him, because I knew he'd rather stab himself with a knife than recount those horrible memories.
People within the walls of Sina had no idea what titans even looked like, yet they pretended to know the pain of having to annihilate them one by one, losing countless, irreplaceable human lives in the process.
"Insensitive is what they are..." I whispered to Levi, the wine making my tongue a little loose.
"Tch, tell me about it." Levi agreed.
As the night progressed, I scanned the room for people who looked like could be Levi's family, but I didn't see anyone.
Could he really have no one? I figured it'd be stupid to ask, they would've introduced themselves by now.
"Son!" My father yelled as he walked over to us, obviously drunker than I. He got real close to Levi and kissed him on the cheek, which made me tense up. I knew Levi wouldn't like that, but with the way he reacted, my father would have never known. Levi actually smiled at him.
I knew Levi just wanted to wipe his face as quickly as he could, but he refrained, and gave my father the reaction he would want, making my heart melt.
My father wanted a son so bad, but after me, my parents couldn't have children anymore, so that dream never came true.
"You are our family now...L-levi!" My father stuttered. "You will always have a...home with us!!" I giggled, but Levi looked taken aback. I couldn't tell if he was acting or genuinely touched.
"Thank you." Was all he said back.
"Sweetie! You were so beautiful!" My sober mom said coming over to me. She was probably chasing after my drunk dad.
"Honey! Get off of him!" She yelled at father, since he was still very close to Levi.
"(Y/n), could I steal you for a bit? There is someone I'd like for you to meet!" My mother said.
Levi nodded, as I got up. I felt bad leaving him alone with my drunk dad, but the worst that would happen is my father kissing him again, and if that was the worst, then oh well.
My mom dragged me to a corner, but there was nobody around, which confused me.
"Sweetie..." She said, glaring at me. I gave her a confused look.
"You didn't tell me...that this was arranged..." She confessed, her eyes tearing up.
Fuck.
She wasn't supposed to know that.
"Momma, it's okay!" I told her, hoping she'd listen.
"This isn't someone you fell in love with?" She whimpered.
I winced, since I knew she wouldn't like my answer.
"No, but he's very dear to me. I know that one day, I will...fall in love with him." I confided. Those words felt strange coming out of my mouth. My brain filled my head with images of Levi fighting when we were in our squad. How he moved so miraculously through the air, how he kept all of us safe for such a long time. How deep down inside, we were his family.
Now I was the only one left.
A light bulb when off in my head.
Maybe that's why Erwin picked me.
"Since when do Scouts have arranged marriages?!" My mother whisper screamed at me. I could tell she was starting to get upset.
"Mom, I'll be 100% honest with you, but you have to promise me you'll accept this marriage once I'm done explaining."
She looked at me, her anger, sadness and love for me all conflicted in her eyes.
"Okay..."
I walked her out of the reception hall, and we sat outside, in the dim moonlight.
"I'm sorry mother, I haven't been fully honest with you." I told her, as I grabbed onto her hand.
"A couple of months ago, I almost died, but Levi saved me. I still got really hurt, so I was dropped from his squad."
"What happened to you?" She asked, fear in her voice.
"Just a couple of broken bones, but I'm alive today because of him."
I could tell, her sympathy was coming back.
"Levi is from the Underground." I started, as she softly gasped. "He used to be a criminal, but Commander Erwin gave him a new, honorable chance on life. He believes that Levi will have a better advantage being accepted by the people if he had, well, a wife. That's where I come into this."
"Honey, is this what you want?" She asked as she squeezed my hand. I thought hard about her question, but I couldn't help but instantly want to say yes.
"I owe Levi my life, so it is. We might not ever have true love, but that's okay. He'll protect me, he already has before."
My mother took a deep breath, and gave me a weak smile.
"Please, mother, accept him. And don't tell father." I urged.
She nodded as she got up, wiping a tear that fell free from her eye. I knew she was just worried about me, but I had faith that this marriage wouldn't be as bad as I originally thought.
